Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammad al-Hakim said his country would stand by the Iranian nation and government in the era of US sanctions against Tehran. Iraq stands with Iran and is willing to act as an intermediary between its neighbor and the United States, Hakim said on Saturday speaking in a press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Baghdad. He added that Baghdad does not believe an “economic blockade” by the US could be fruitful, according to Reuters. Zarif, for his part, condemned the US sanctions and said Tehran would strongly defend itself against any military or economic aggression and called on Europe to do more to preserve the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers. In May 2018, the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany). Ever since, the EU has failed to make good on its promise to save the nuclear deal and facilitate Iran’s economic trade with the international community. The Iranian minister also said that the Islamic Republic wanted to build balanced relations with its Persian Gulf Arab neighbors and that it had proposed signing a non-aggression pact with them. In a resounding statement of support for the Government and people of Iraq in the country’s post-conflict recovery, the United Nations Security Council on 21 May 2019 extended the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for another year, until 31 May 2020. Unanimously adopting resolution 2470 (2019) under Chapter 6 of the Charter of the United Nations, the Council reaffirmed the independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Iraq, emphasizing the importance of stability, prosperity, and security for the people of Iraq, the region, and the international community. It also confirmed its continued support for Iraq in addressing the challenges it faces as it continues its post-conflict stabilization efforts and increasingly turns to the tasks of recovery, reconstruction and reconciliation. The Council also called on the international community to remain strongly committed to supporting Iraq’s humanitarian, stabilization, reconstruction, and development efforts. The Council further decided, among other things, that the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and UNAMI will continue to support the country’s Government and people in advancing inclusive political dialogue and national and community-level reconciliation, promoting accountability, as well as protecting human rights, judicial reform, the rule of law and women’s empowerment, and in facilitating regional dialogue and cooperation, including on issues of border security, energy, the environment, water, and refugees. In the resolution, UNAMI was further tasked with promoting, supporting, and facilitating, in partnership with the Government of Iraq, the coordination and delivery of humanitarian assistance and the safe, orderly, and voluntary return or local integration, as appropriate, of refugees and displaced persons, including through the efforts of the UN Country Team. The Mission was also called upon to promote, support and facilitate Iraqi and international efforts on economic reform, capacity-building and establishing conditions for recovery, reconstruction and sustainable development. From Al Jazeera. Any opinions expressed are those of the authors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Iraq Business News. Could Iraq be pulled into a conflict between the United States and Iran? The United States is raising the stakes against what it calls threats from Iran. President Donald Trump is sending an extra 1,500 troops to the Middle East. He’s also bypassing Congress to sell billions of dollars’ of weapons to Iran’s rivals, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Iran’s neighbour, Iraq, is vowing support and offering to mediate. At the same time, Iraq is wary of straining relations with the Americans. How should leaders in Baghdad handle this balancing act? Washington has exempted Baghdad from some of its unilateral sanctions against Tehran, allowing Iraq to continue importing energy from Iran, according to the US envoy to Baghdad. Baghdad can now buy energy from Iran, US charge d’affaires Joey Hood told reporters on Wednesday, Iran’s Press TV reported. The waiver will allow Iraq to continue buying gas and electricity from Iran. The administration of US President Donald Trump said in March it was extending a 90-day waiver for the second time to let Iraq continue energy imports from Iran. The US envoy did not explain whether he was referring to the same waiver Washington gave Baghdad in March or he was declaring the issuance of new exemptions. Gas imports from Iran generate as much as 45 percent of Iraq’s 14,000 megawatts of electricity consumed daily. Iran transmits another 1,000 megawatts directly, making itself an indispensable energy source for its Arab neighbor. Iraq and Iran share a 1,400-kilometer-long border. For their run-of-the-mill maintenance, Iraqis depend on Iranian companies for many things from food to machinery, electricity, natural gas, fruits and vegetables. Iraqi Prime Minister Adel abdul-Mahdi said on Tuesday that his country had prepared “strategic alternatives” for exporting oil in case a war erupted between the US and Iran, Anadolu reported. During his weekly press conference, he said: “It is important to deal with the North Iraq region and Turkey to find alternative ways to export Iraqi oil.” He added: “We have prepared strategic alternatives in case of closure of Strait of Hormuz,” without giving more details. “Using multiple ports to export oil is a strategic project,” he said, “and we are working on this.” This came after threats by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important routes for transporting oil in the world. By Ranj Alaadin, Brookings Institution. The opinions expressed are those of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Iraq Business News. How US-Iran tensions could disrupt Iraq’s fragile peaceTensions between the United States and Iran are escalating rapidly, particularly since U.S. warships were dispatched in response to reported threats against U.S. forces in Iraq from Iran and its proxies. The U.S. has withdrawn all non-emergency embassy staff from Iraq and, on Monday, a mortar attack by Iran’s proxies in Baghdad, striking in the vicinity of the U.S. embassy, raised the prospects of a conflict on Iraqi soil even further.
