After his arrival in Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan region, Kurdistan Region President Massud Barzani held a press conference in which he shed light on the outcomes of his visit to Baghdad and his meetings with Iraq, and Turkish officials.

Barzani first spoke about the US-Iraq pact, saying “Yesterday in the meeting of the Iraqi council for national security, we said that this pact should be done, and that is the formal stance of the Kurdistan region. It is expected that the pact to be sent to the Iraqi parliament and government. Every side is free to express their opinions and stances."

Concerning the relations of Kurdistan region with Baghdad or entire conditions in Iraq, Barzani said that they held many meetings with all the Iraqi political sides and discussed their views in detail. He indicated that both sides agreed to establish five separate committees to deal with five suspended issues, including: The Iraqi constitution, oil and finance, the issues of disputed areas between Baghdad and Erbil, and Iraq’s foreign policy dossier.

Kurdistan region president indicated that those committees would be established jointly among the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Daawa Party, Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC), and the Iraqi Islamic Party (IIP). He said that they hope those committees, when reached an agreement, to bring back their proposals to their own leaderships in order to be decided upon.

“It is true that the Kurdistan region sometimes have conflicts with the Iraqi federal government in Baghdad, but that does not mean that they are only related to the Kurdistan region, rather they are related to the power - sharing way of ruling in Iraq, Iraqi constitution and its interpretations, which all are related to the entre Iraqi people. Therefore, we not only defend our rights, but rather we defend the rights of all the Iraqi people. We defend the Iraqi constitution which all Iraqis voted on. That was the outcomes of our meetings in Baghdad, but this time it is serious and that committees must reach solutions, or else there might be other stances,” Kurdistan region president told the reporters.

Barzani indicated the visit by Turkey’s envoy to Iraq Murad Ozcelik, saying: “That delegation has come to see me; that is a good initiative by which the barrier of direct bilateral relations between both sides has broken down. We hope that lead to joint understandings to deal with the issues in the future.”

Concerning his expected visit to Iran, Barzani confirmed the news, saying “We have an agenda to visit several foreign countries to clarify our views since sometimes there are some misunderstandings. I will visit Iran soon.”
