Wherbie, how far away do you sit from that 47"?
My couch is about 10 feet away, I think 46/47 would be ok from this distance..

We have been shopping for over a year now...comparing quality of picture....color brilliance.....clarity...etc. When we first decided the Sony was the best at all those things we were comparing with others.....that particular size TV was about $3500. We have a fairly large living room and a huge wall to utilize if we decide to mount the TV. I think the size you are talking about will work just fine. I like the bigger screen because I can see the TV with no problem when I am in the kitchen cooking.

We bought ours about 2 months ago from Amazon.com. The price was $1949 + $199.99 S & H. So for around $2150 not only did we get the TV.....but we also got the mounting kit to mount it on the wall if we so desire......the HDMI cable for High Definition picture and sound through our cable box. AND we got an extended 3 year warranty AND a large cleaning kit.

This is the company we bought the TV from through the Amazon.com website. acephotodigital.com I didn't want to enter it so that it came up as a direct link. Sometimes the forum blocks website addresses.

Anyways....good luck on your new purchase!! We LOVE our new Sony!!

Top of the line Samsung LCD hands down. Read the reviews. Look at one side by side against the Sony XBR, Samsung has a much better picture and is cheaper. Your best price will either be Amazon or Fry's

Try the Sony with motion flo technology. The image is as clear as any I've seen. Samsung and Phillips are also great buys. I bought my first 27" plasma for over $10,000. What a waste.:headbang:

KDL46V4100 $1,800

40"
KDL40V4100 $1,400
KDL40W4100 $1,800

per my son, Sony Bravia gets 4 out of 5 star rating

per Sears salesman;
W is the second highest version
V is the third highest version
S is the fourth highest version

Sears is offering 24 months, no interest, purchasing. Yay!
Sears seems to be competitive with other stores in my area.

The 46" model was too large for our room and we will purchase the 40" KDL40W4100 model very soon.

Your fireplace brick up the wall is likely 60 inches

Put a 58 inch phillips plasma.....on the wall, no space used up, no one really even knows its there ...unless its on, and even though i have sound surround....without the 'effect' , actually the tv sound is better.
Thats why i use both for nascar/movies

I like my XBR, but the tuners that sony put in them are garbage..

Yep, exactly CP. The touch of color models is what I am talking about. Get the 750 series if you don't have surround sound because it comes with a built in subwoofer and a few other perks. If you are running a separate surround sound system, then you can go for the 650.

I have a Samsung 71 series. These were the top of the line Samsungs before the new touch of color series. I love my tv. At the time, the top of the line Sony had an 18,000 to 1 contrast ratio. My Samsung has 25,000 to one.

Well, the new touch of color series is 50,000 to 1 contrast ratio and the Sony only has 30,000 to 1.

The only concern you may have with the Samsung is it has a shiny screen compared to the Sony's matte screen. So if you have bright windows behind your tv, you might not like the glare. You have to see what I mean in the store. On a side note though, Samsung also made a 120hz tv with a matte screen but the contrast ratio was not as high (probably why the picture is not as good on the sony). Also, I have talked to several Samsung reps that actually work for the Factory. They said that Samsung makes all LCD screens for Sony.

I was TV shopping with my mom a few weeks ago and we looked at the Sony and Samsung. Price is not a concern, we were just looking for the best TV. We both thought the Samsung had a better picture by far and every rep we talked with at both Good Guys and Fry's said that the Samsung was superior.

A good place to research is the AVforums:

http://www.avforums.com/

The biggest Tech Geeks in the world hang out in those forums and you will find all of your answers there.

Like I mentioned earlier, Amazon seemed to have the best prices, no tax, and free shipping. Read the reviews of the Samsung. From what I have learned in my research, even the delivery is top knoch. They set up the TV and make sure it is perfect before they leave.

Here's a few prices on the TOC Samsungs from Amazon (the only prices I have even seen come close is Fry's Electronics (I don't know if they are nationwide). They also have a 46' tv. Like I said, the difference between the 650 and 750 is that the 750 has different speakers. I believe that the outer rim of the TV is different as well. The 750 series also has some type of art show program on it.

I managed an electronic store for many years and was told by the president of our corp. that Samsung makes the actual LCD screen for many companies including Sony who just makes the guts of the tv. So for picture quality I would say Samsung all the way. As far as repair issues are concerned I have had all makes sent for repair, but the only LCD brand in my years as a store manger I never sent off was a Sharp, they were the pioneer in the LCD technology, another very good LCD and I am kind of partial to the Aquos line of the Sharp brand.

Just make sure if you are planning on buying a 1080p set that you can receive 1080p signal. I know in my area that Comcast does not broadcast in 1080p. The best you can get is 720, so to buy a set that is 1080p capable is a waste.

Samsung is a good buy for the money, but if you plan on looking into the Sharp Aquos be prepared to spend for the quality :puke:, top of the line 46" will have a 27,000:1 contrast ratio (amazing), 1080p which isn't even being broadcast yet, and a quick 4ms response time. If anything Poke look at your contrast ratios and response times, most associates won't know what that means, but the lower the response time the quicker it refreshes, meaning you won't have a trailing effect when you watch action movies or play video games(if you do anyway:giggle:). Hope this helps.

Poke,

I've got two Panasonic Viera class plasma sets: one 37" 720p/1080i and one 42" 720p/1080i. Both rooms are well lit in the daytime, and we only have trouble with glare on occasion when sunshine from the slider in the kitchen is at just the right angle to reach into the living room. There are no walls between (it's an open style kitchen). The 37" upstairs was bought several years ago when I was in CT, and lives inside an armoir style cabinet. In CT, that cabinet and the living room we had at the time limited the maximum size to 37". The 42" in the lower level sits on a TV stand, and we could easily put a much larger set there, but at the $900 price tag last Christmas, it was a steal from Best Buy (I play the BB vs CC game too). These days, the equivalent Viera class plasma at 42" with 1080p is about $1400 to $1500, but as previously posted, seems like Black Friday would be the best time to buy.

Whenever I go to BB or CC (or any other place with TV's for sale), I continue to look for picture quality, and it just seems to me that Panasonic sets are almost always fairly clear winners in the quality category, and only far more expensive Pioneer sets seem to match or do better in the picture quality arena. When we first got a plasma set, the Panasonics were just blowing away every other brand, and it was blatantly obvious, even in the poor lighting conditions in many electronics stores. We shopped for several months before making the commitment to plasma, and have been extremely satisfied.

Even more pleasing have been the results we're getting with our Panasonic Blue-Ray player (attached to the 42"). Even though we don't have 1080p, we set the Blu-Ray player to always use 1080i, and the results are extraordinary. I'm not sure one really NEEDS 1080p, and I've seen the 1080p playback in stores. I've had opportunity to watch Blu-Ray output forced to 1080i and then back to 1080p, and I just can't tell the difference.

I almost wonder if the 1080p is a marketing gimmick that given the overall technical capability of plasma screen response to any 1080 resolution signal, one might simply not be capable of seeing a difference without high-tech equipment doing the observing instead of the human eye.

I've been reading a lot about Blu-Ray, and it appears that the best players are coming from Panasonic, with the BD30K (what I have) available from Buy.com at $260, and the BD50K (includes internet connectiivity for Live features) at around $575 to $600. However, there are a couple of good alternative ways to view your Blu-Ray DVD's: 1) a Lite-On Blu-Ray player / DVD drive (or even writer) for your computer, 2) Similar device from Panasonic (LF-PB721 is the burner). I'll eventually have the latter.

Finally, my computer monitor is a 24" Viewsonic LCD (1920x1280) with an HDMI input. No remote control, but still a tremendous device for handling multiple inputs, including VGA as well as DVI and component video.

The Sony Bravia LCD is a good choice , I bought my grandmother a Magnavox 42" 1080 LCD for Christmas at a well known "wholesale club" . It was the absolute largest that would fit into the entertainment center that she would not part with and at $749. , quite the bargain I thought, so far so good !

I will purchase this one. The price rises and falls from day to day on Amazon. I have seen it 1499.00 one day, and 1349.00 with free shiping.

It is the best hands down.

Samsung has the 120htz refresh rate which is needed for the PS3/Xbox and quick motion.

I have not bought yet because they have extended the Digital Conversion out a few months.

But when I pull the Trigger.

This Samsung, will be it.

AND I will pay less than 1200.00 Bucks... AMAZON seems the way to go, you just have to watch them as they change prices regularly..

There seems to be some great info on this site and this thread is about breaking in a Plasma TV for the first 120 hours. The science behind it is some type of aging the phosphorus so all the colors will be more in tune when adjusting your settings and offsets.

The last repairman after a few attempts with my plasma, he blew it up. What a #$%*&^%!!! fight with my extended warranty company I paid $500 for. I am real happy with the new Panasonic. Thanks for the tip. I've been looking for about three years as every time I save the money, something big goes wrong and there goes the doe.

As for the question at hand, the "Touch of Color" Samsung produces, recently came out in black also.. The latest model blows all it's competitors out of the water. It comes in 46" or 52". You need to check it out in person. It's like watching 3D. They even moved the speakers as that was the only down fall IMO. I can always change the sound, so I was looking for the best picture. Sorry if this is redundant info. Don't have time to read all posts. Happy Shopping/44

Wait until after Thanksgiving for the Black Friday sales. I read recently that personal electronics are due to dive in price. Too many units in stock and nobody buying. Prices may be cut as much as 50% So hold your horses for a couple of months and save some serious cash.
