*Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the
establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter
Administration?*
Anybody? Anything? No? Didn't think so!
*Bottom line, we've spent several hundred billion dollars in
support of an agency the reason for which not one person who reads
this can remember. Ready? It was very simple, and at the time
everybody thought it very appropriate.
**The Department of Energy was instituted August 4,1977, TO
LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL. HEY, PRETTY EFFICIENT, HUH?
AND NOW IT'S 2008, 31 YEARS LATER, AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS NECESSARY
DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR, THEY HAVE 16,000 FEDERAL
EMPLOYEES, AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND LOOK AT
THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE! THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND
SAY 'WHAT WAS I THINKING?'*
Ah yes, good ole bureaucracy. And now we are going to turn the
Banking system over to them? God Help us.*

All I can say is.............where is Palin ? We need her assistance.

Yes I remember it well they talked about coal gasification, coal liquifaction, oil shale, and on and on. Houston Texas and all the big EPC firms hired thousands of employees from all over the country. Interest rates for housing were 18-21%. They canned the whole deal and left Houston with thousands of people out of work with 18% mortgages. They all walked from their homes because there were no other jobs in Houston. Houston slid into the abyss for the next 20 years and their housing market continues to be the one of the lowest priced in the U.S.
I personally had investments in housing and land that did nothing for twenty years, but you couldn't sell them even at a loss. Yes I remember the Carter Years very well.

Now then. Given the eco policies now being pushed, that should make this department "expendable" to Obama when he says he go through the budget line item by line item, cutting out redundant, and unnecessary pork.
That's enough to pay for the auto industry bailout, isn't it?
And it eliminates a bunch of life time parasites on the government system. Then all we have to do is pay them a couple years of unemployment, no medical, dental, or retirement benefits. Cheap payback, I'd say.
It certainly didnt help when Reagan came in and LITERALLY took the solar panels off the White House. That kind of derailed Carters plans, huh?

Carter's "legend" is still living DC.
At about $24,200,000,000.00 per year at the tax payer's trough.
And I know that makes you just as proud as apple pie, doesn't it? Billion dollar boon doggles from the public teat.
And had we let Carters plan stick, we'd be in a much better situation right now. Reagan made quick work of it...

LOL :yelrotflmao::yelrotflmao::yelrotflmao:
You are trying to say that Carter is in history as a better president than Reagan?
I'm sure glad you aren't a public school teacher, or school text book publisher.
As usual, you, John Kerry, AlGore and the likes are on the wrong side of history, and will stop at nothing to portray it.
Your lack of credibility has no boundaries.

How do you figure solar still to this day is not a viable option....it creats too little energy.

Im saying that Carter had a great energy plan which Reagan did away with, and had he not, we'd be in a better position right now as far as our energy dependency. If you deny that, you are truely clueless and nothing anyone says will convince you, so Im not going to bother beyond this point.
And as a matter of fact, I have taught in public and Catholic schools, and I OWN a publishing company!

Yes, Carter's energy plan would have set us on a steady course of weaning off interdependence of foreign oil.
Carter, however, was a socialist, and socialism would have been the route America took.
We now have another socialist president (elect), so the Carter dream is still alive...

That certainly covers the revisionist groups. At least they will love you.
And LongShot is correct. Solar is still not cost effective, even after all these years of technological advances.

I fully agree. My father built a solar house in the late 70's, and actually received substantial tax credits to do it, unfortunately nobody wanted to buy it, but hey.. tax break. Carter had congress put forth legislature to have all American autos achieve 50 miles/gallon in 10 years, Reagan rolled that plan back and look at where our automakers are now, broke and borrowing.. Carter also created the Windfall Profits Tax and Non-Conventional Fuels Tax credit. The Windfall profits I dont agree with, as it ended the boom of the late 70's-early 80's. However I have Carter to thank for my first few decent paying jobs (in the early 90's), thanks to the NCFTC. There began a "mini-boom" in drilling for non-conventional fuels such as Coal-Bed Methane and tight-sands gas, stuff that operators passed over in their search for easy oil and gas finds. I paid off my college loans and bought a truck and a house thanks to that sweet gem.
Yes Carter was worthless in a lot of ways, particularly his foreign policy, but his energy policies were generally in line with my "energy philosophy".
Obama is clearly going to attempt a similar energy strategy (The Green Evolution).
Enjoy..
