The region is awash with cash as Middle East-related investments stood at US$13.4 billion in the first half of this year, while the value of rights issues on the Gulf’s stock markets has risen to a staggering US$9.1 billion so far this year — a ten-fold increase on 2004.

According to Gulf Capital, the share prices of 26 Gulf companies that launched IPOs in the past year have increased on average by 446%. Saudi Arabia’s Al Bilad bank tops the list with a 1454% rise since February.

“There could be a sharp pull back,” says Faraj. “The issue is when? The other question is whether it would be a short, sharp shock, like the 1987 global crash or a more prolonged stagnation. It’s a function of how much liquidity is left in the system and how robust the underlying economy is.”
