View Full Version : What is your Top 10 Must Have ISX stocks?
Anyone want to rank your Top 10 must have stocks?
Let's focus on future potential, not past performance and why your info leads you to this conclusion.
Stability is important too.
I'd start but I don't have enough ISX experience to give a valid opinion.
I was looking around these forums and see a need for more cross talk about potential ISX stock picks.
Especially since we all have such a hard time obtaining information/intel on the traded companies.

Thanks for starting this thread
I will be getting in soooooooooon Iraq style and would be asking the same!
I also think as time moves forward would be nice to have ISX threads broken into sectors with stickies for each stock to add comments and info as it comes in.
Any others feel the same????

Many of us bought up bank shares because in Iraq, it's all about the oil and petrodollars, and banks will probably be at the forefront of helping the Iraqi economy get off the ground. Also, there has been quite a bit of news about banks in Iraq receiving lots of training in modern banking methods, which to me bodes well for the future. Private banks have also been partnering with foreign banks such as HSBC, Citibank, banks in Kuwait, etc, which indicates there is a willingness on the part of these banks to invest - good sign. Others have bought into hotels and tourism sector, though I feel that is still too risky for me, given how precarious the security situation is. You are a smart guy - as you know, the Iraqi economy needs to get off the ground, and infrastructure is the name of the game. That would mean construction, banking, and real estate could prove winners in the long run. Other industries such as food or drink could also be profitable. Investment companies are risky still IMO...
There is alot I still don't know about the ISX in general and the companies specifically, so I can't really recommend specific stocks. My strategy has been accumulate and hold, and to stick with areas which will see an impact when FDI begins to really roll in and the engine of progress begins to churn. I'm still in the black so far...though nothing to write home about.
Good luck...and my primary advice is to be patient...those yelling that you had better get in now before it's too late have too much time on their hands.

Allow me to indirectly answer your question. Rather than focusing on companies, I'll focus on sectors since available info on individual companies is unavailable.
1. Overweight BANKING for the same reason mentioned by Williambedloe.
2. Overweight INSURANCE (home & auto insurance currently inexistant in Iraq. Only life insurance available to the wealthiest only - tremendous potential as it becomes more common to the average Iraqi AND as Home/Auto is introduced/mandatory)
3. Overwieght INVESTMENT (Sector will shoot up as ISX takes off - business model without expenses, only gains (or losses) from investments)
4. Underweight INDUSTRIAL due to high operating costs (electricity/production problems/Quality control problems) Although there is few select Industrial companies doing well despite all this.
5. Underweight TOURISM for obvious reasons (security concern). EXEPTION: religious tourism (eg. Karbala)
6. Neutral on SERVICE - not enough info
7. Neutral on AGRICULTURE - not enough info

2008 Press Releases
American Embassy Welcomes Citi Correspondent Relationship Services for Warka Bank for Investment and Finance
December 15, 2008
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad welcomed the new partnership established between Citibank and Al Warka Bank of Iraq. For the first time, clients of both establishments will now be able to execute cash payments, wire transfers, and trade transactions to both corporate and retail entities in all Iraqi cities and provinces. The alliance is seen as an important step in support of Iraq’s banking sector and the country’s overall economic development.
American Ambassador Ryan Crocker extended congratulations to the American and Iraqi institutions on the historic agreement. “This banking alliance is a milestone in Iraq’s efforts to reintegrate itself into today’s global business environment,” he said, adding, “The new partnership will help put into place the conditions necessary to attract more international business to Iraq.”
The alliance between Citi and Al Warka Bank is another step in Citi’s participation in the development of Iraq’s financial network. Citi has been involved in Iraq since 2003 and has worked closely with the government and key financial institutions to promote Iraqi business and trade.
Paul Galant, CEO of Citi’s Global Transaction Services business, commented, “We are committed to supporting the needs of public-sector institutions, globally and in Iraq, and we look forward to a productive and mutually beneficial relationship in this effort with our partner Al Warka Bank.”
Saad Al Bunnia, CEO, Warka Bank for Investment and Finance said: “As an institution that has served Iraq since 1999, we have played a significant role in the reconstruction of the country by participating as a lead financier in many core sectors including power, water, communication and construction. We look forward to unleashing the full force of the partnership with Citi for the benefit of the new Iraq.”

Thanks to everyone!
I've learned a couple things like strategies on how to determine profitable sectors.
As we all know indivdual companies are alot more difficult to predict.
Maybe we can create an ISX company background database somehow on the forum.
This will help new investors research individually without having "experienced" investors rehash old information.
Just a thought....
Again, Thanks to everyone, and please continue posting if you have more in the future.

We're in 2010 War Eagle, according to the latest publication by Saban, December 2009 represents the lowest number of fatal bombings in Iraq (4) since November 2003. That number has been steadily declining from its peak in 2006 (69 monthly bombings).
If four buildings in Iraq would get bombed this month out of a few thousand insured, I'd say the Insurance companies got a successful strategy.

I was considering agriculture last month, but that sector doesn't seem to be doing as well as the others.

I too took a position this week in Modern Construction after having looked at their financials. Wanted to take advantage of their low PE ratio and return to the market. The question is where did Warka put me in line?
Also remember that Investment bank is handleing the clearing for the ISX. They take a fraction of the fees for their service. These exploding volumes should be a good sign for this Bank stock. Look at NYX, CME and the Nas. Could you imagine if they ever started to handle the clearing for commodities? All I am saying is that you should take a diversified position in a Bank, Pharma, Insurance, Transport, Ag and then go back and fill in the gaps.
Alot of great suggestions on this thread.

Opportunist, Investment Bank was one of my first purchases because they act as clearing house for ISX. I am heavy in all the leading banks.
I also have good positions with transports, Al-Hilal, National Chemical, Al Khazer Construction and Baghdad Softdrinks. Modern Construction is new for me. The financials do look good, part of the appeal for me too. I can't wait to see what I was able to purchase tomorrow or Friday. This is so much fun!!!
