BAGHDAD, April 2 (KUNA) -- Iraqi outgoing Vice President Adel Abdulmahdi and outgoing Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki met here on Friday to assess the progress towards forming a new cabinet after the March 7 legislative elections.
The meeting highlighted the importance of building consensus among the winning political blocs and capitalizing on the previous experiment of post-vote coalition formations, according to a press release.
"We always favor working within the framework of national unity government where all winning lists can shoulder a shared responsibility," the statement quoted Abdulmahdi as saying during the meeting.
"We are responsible for the success of the new experiment of political participation. The political forces have a lot in common which could serve as firm ground for collective work and multi-lateral partnerships," he affirmed.
Commenting on the stalemate in the Iraq-Arab ties, Abdulmahdi said efforts were underway to break the deadlock, promote open-up to the world and prevent any form of foreign intervention in Iraq's domestic affairs.
Abdulmahdi unveiled a plan to make a tour of the countries of the Gulf region including the State of Kuwait.
"Iraq plays a pivotal role in the regional affairs, so she has to open up to, and have close ties with, neighborly Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Iran and Turkey as well as the all Arab countries," he added. (end) mhg.gb KUNA 021802 Apr 10NNNN
