Iraqi electoral commission approves amendment on parliament seats

BAGHDAD, April 2 (KUNA) -- Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) here on Friday approved an amendment, by which seats 21 at parliament have the right to name their candidates.
As specified in the Constitution of Iraq, seats are allocated by governorate with additional "compensatory" seats allocated to those parties whose national share of the vote isn't reflected in the seats won at the governorate level.
IHEC spokesman Judge Qassem Abuodi told KUNA that the commission decided to grant winning lists the right to name their candidates for compensational seats.
Nevertheless, number of appeals received by IHEC reached 182, as the law guarantees for the objectionable entities or those who are dissatisfied with IHEC results to appeal before a judicial board.
Most appeals concerned women quota, IHEC board member Iyad Al-Kanani said, adding that the commission formed sub-committees to look into these appeals and have specified next Monday as deadline to receive the appeals.
Seats of the next Iraqi parliament are 325.
The votes of Iraqis living abroad would originally have been counted in the compensatory seats, which were reduced from 45 seats to 16 and eight of these 16 seats were allocated to specific national minorities -- five for Iraqi Christians and one each for Yazidis, Shabak and Mandaeans. (end).
