Iraq making good progress toward military self-sufficiency
- -
Washington: Iraq is making good progress toward being able take over its own security, with some 227,000 troops and police now "trained and equipped," US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said.
Rumsfeld said that by the end of 2006, that number will grow to about 325,000, roughly equally divided between police and army. "The total today is about 227,000 if you combine them both, and they are all trained and equipped," Rumsfeld told members of the House Armed Services Committee at a hearing on the US defense budget for the coming year.
