Maliki-Allawi meeting aims to pressure National Alliance - politician
July 1, 2010 - 12:56:21
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The meeting between Head of the Dawlat al-Qanoon (State of Law) and chief of al-Iraqiya bloc, Iyad Allawi, is a pressuring card on Sadrists and the National Alliance, a Kurdish politician said on Thursday.
“Al-Maliki wants to pressure the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council and Sadrists by meeting Allawi, because he did not get the sufficient support from the national coalition,” Mahmoud Othman told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
“Allawi seeks to use the meeting to pressure other political blocs as he could not gain support from Kurds or from the national alliance,” he added.
The two frontrunners in the March 7 parliamentary election held their second meeting on Tuesday (June 29) since the vote at Allawi’s Baghdad office.
Allawi’s list won 91 seats in the 325-member parliament, compared to 89 for al-Maliki’s alliance. The National Iraqi Alliance came third with 70 seats.
Political tension followed the election results. Both Allawi and al-Maliki are competing to head the future government. Allawi insists he has the right to form a new government because his bloc won the highest number of seats.
Meanwhile, al-Maliki says he has the largest bloc in the parliament with 159 deputies, after forming the National Alliance with the Ammar al-Hakim’s Iraqi National List. That total, however, is still four seats short of a majority.
