So much for "Sports" as the name...havnet been here in awhile but every thread here is for Nascar.(not a sport in my opinion)...Shouldnt there be a Nascar section instead?

Gotta watch out for cheaters/rule breakers ...
"I'd just like to take this opportunity to point out just how full of useless knowledge I am: under the rules of the USATT (specifically 10.10), you're not allowed to touch the table with your free hand during a volley as Hillary is doing here. Point to Bill." :lmao:
(sorry, lost the link from where the above was from)
(not a sport in my opinion)
I like ya HJ13, but don't EVEN get me started! :lmao:
Top Ten Reasons Why NASCAR Is The Superior Sport
Jenni Thompson
May 8, 2002
10. You’re not trying to defeat just one person or one team, but 42 of them.
9. Drivers don’t get a time out or a halftime break.
8. A race doesn’t last just 2 hours. Sometimes it goes on for two days (i.e. Richmond).
7. They race 36 weeks a year compared to the NFL’s 17.
6. Since 50 million Elvis fans couldn’t be wrong, how could 75 million NASCAR fans?
5. In NASCAR, forty-somethings hold steady with 20 year olds.
4. Even the pit crewmembers wear helmets.
3. Drivers are multi-talented. In what other sport can people like Elliott Sadler drive and then do a Britney Spears inspired rain dance?
2. It’s not a “game.” You don’t pass go and collect 200 dollars.
And the #1 reason why NASCAR is a sport is…
1. Where else can a hot dog wrapper or a piece of plastic keep you from winning?

OK .... I was going to cut and paste a few things, but the more I read the more I wanted to post here.
Try this http://www.extremefitness.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-8928.html
Here's some highlights that I copied just from the first few posts - some of these people aren't fans and even they admit that it IS a SPORT:
*I guess I would consider NASCAR a Sport because it involves competition, like...Fencing.
Chess is considered a sport....figure that one out...
Maybe we should petition the Olympics to include both NASCAR & Chess....Ha Ha Ha
Hunting is considered a "sport" & unless it's like in England where they do that "Fox Hunting" against each other, the only thing you're competing against is the Deer, Elk, Moose, Bear... etc
I know there's a skill to NASCAR Dirving & it takes ALOT of endurance. Most the Driver's work out & train
for it.
*Seems to me its kind of like some winter sports like bobsledding. You have a group of people working together to beat another group. Same thing in NASCAR. There is a team of mechanics and spotters working together to get their car across the finish line first. There's also a systm of points and strategy that most non-fans don't know about.
I think the big hang up is that most things are considered sports only if they involve physical exertion. (RET's thoughts: Ummm .... drivers have to endure several things and what about the pit crew?)
Also there is a bias still hanging on about NASCAR being for rednecks only. I've been to some big races and there's all kinds of people there. Different ethnicities, different occupations and income levels. Also a lot of women, but not usually the girly kind. Since its become so commercialized there is a new crowd going to NASCAR races. (RET's thoughts: Ummm ... I AM girly and I'm a huge fan. This poster must not look around because there are many like me at the tracks ... )
*Not a NASCAR fan at all. I get no pleasure in watching a bunch of guys driving around an oval.
However, last summer a DJ down here in the south started ranting how NASCAR was not a sport. One of the businesses had a NASCAR race car for a business promo, and the DJ took a dare to do a live remote for 3 hours in the car (during the middle of the day without the engine running). After an hour, the DJ had to exit the car because he was getting dehydrated from the shear heat of being in the car during the day. I think it changed his tune about what these drivers endure as far as shear heat inside the car.
I thought this was relevant.
*I was the same way before I went to a few live races. I never understood why people wanted to watch guys drive in a circle for 500 miles. But then live races help you understand the subtle things that happen during the race, the point system, pit strategy, etc... Its the same reason I still don't like hockey, I don't understand how it works. (RET's thoughts: he's RIGHT ON with this post.)
*As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the amount of skill involved. When I was younger I thought it was just a bunch of fat rednecks making left hand turns. The more I watched, the more I understood the amount of skill needed to pass a vehicle on a turn going over a 100 MPH. To see some of the vehicles travelling that fast and be mere inches apart at some points convinced me once and for all that it is a sport.
I know of someone who defines "Sport" as something that involves a contest, a ball, or a puck as to what makes something a sport. By definition then, ice-skating would not be a sport because it is decided by a series of judges.
I'll stop there ... lots of good points made in the link provided, though.:huge:
Definition of SPORT:
“a human activity capable of achieving a result requiring physical exertion and/or physical skill, which, by its nature and organisation, is competitive and is generally accepted as being a sport.”
http://www.asf.org.au/definition.asp
A sport consists of a physical (physical: the word "physical," when used alone, has several possible meanings in the english language]...
[follow hyperlink for more...]) activity or skill (skill: An ability that has been acquired by training) carried out with a recreational purpose: for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of a skill, or some combination of these. A sport has physical activity, side by side competition, and a scoring system. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess.

It's the only televised competition where the participants might spontaneously explode. However that still doesn't happen enough for me to want to watch it.
LOL ... please don't tell me you are a figure skating fan. :lmao:

But the times they fall down are the only times when I know what's going on, like if they just did something good or bad. Otherwise it's not like I can sit their saying "oh no, that double axel was all wrong, they should've landed a centimeter to the left and flailed around a bit more with their arms."

I'd hate for someone to not fully read your post (like I've NEVER done that on here :lmao: ) and misunderstand ... then show up with a 2" iron (with detachable brush) on the day of curling try outs.
