NO WAR IN THE STREETS
By RALPH PETERS - In Iraq
-------------------------------------
March 1, 2006 -- THE reporting out of Baghdad continues to be hysterical and dishonest. There is no civil war in the streets. None. Period.

Terrorism, yes. Civil war, no. Clear enough?

Yesterday, I crisscrossed Baghdad, visiting communities on both banks of the Tigris and logging at least 25 miles on the streets. With the weekend curfew lifted, I saw traffic jams, booming business — and everyday life in abundance.

Yes, there were bombings yesterday. The terrorists won't give up on their dream of sectional strife, and know they can count on allies in the media as long as they keep the images of carnage coming. They'll keep on bombing. But Baghdad isn't London during the Blitz, and certainly not New York on 9/11.

It's more like a city suffering a minor, but deadly epidemic. As in an epidemic, no one knows who will be stricken. Rich or poor, soldier or civilian, Iraqi or foreigner. But life goes on. No one's fleeing the Black Death — or the plague of terror.

And the people here have been impressed that their government reacted effectively to last week's strife, that their soldiers and police brought order to the streets. The transition is working.

You are being lied to. By elements in the media determined that Iraq must fail. Just give 'em the Bronx cheer.

I like the article except for this line: "It's more like a city suffering a minor, but deadly epidemic." The wording is inappropriate. There is nothing "minor" about the daily dose of death these people are facing. I believe ultimately they shall prevail, but shrugging it off as "minor" is going too far to the callous side of things.

NO WAR IN THE STREETS ... By RALPH PETERS - In Iraq... There is no civil war in the streets. None. Period... Terrorism, yes. Civil war, no. Clear enough? ... You are being lied to. By elements in the media determined that Iraq must fail...

That's exactly what I said yesterday, I said the following on the "Anyone have second thoughts on when since the new events?" thread:

... If you think it's the end of the world because some folks in the news media have an obsession about reporting only macabre news tales about people being slaughtered left and right, you're wrong. It's not the end of the world, Iraq is NOT on the brink of anarchy or civil war, and things are looking much better compared to 2003, 2004, and 2005... The next item on Iraq's national agenda is NOT going to be a civil war, it's going to be eliminating Al Qaeda from Iraq. Make a note of this in your journals: THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE CIVIL WAR IN IRAQ ALONG THE LINES OF SOME FANTASIES ENVISIONED BY OVERWORKED IMAGINATIONS IN THE CHICKEN LITTLE NEWS MEDIA...

I feel vindicated over this issue. The only thing we need to worry about is how long do we need to wait, what are the prospects for a revaluation on a reasonable level, and the prospects of Iraq joining the GCC, etc. There are plenty of articles from one source in particular that should allay any doubts as to whether or not Iraq will ever join the Gulf Cooperation Council in the future. That source is http://www.highbeam.com. After you get to that link, type in "Gulf Cooperation Council and Iraq" in the 'Question/Keyword(s)' field and press 'Research'. You'll get a nice long list of articles by responsible sources from around the world, and no, I'm not including CNN as one of them, in case you were wondering. However, if you want to read the whole article(s), you'll have to submit at least a 7 day trial subscription which you can cancel at any time during the 7 day trial period. Yes, you'll have use your favorite credit card, but don't worry. If you forget to cancel during the 7 days, you'll only get hit for $19.95 for a 1 month subscription, unless you elect a 1 year subscription. All of the articles are brief, but worth reading because they come from reliable and unbiased sources.

Happy readings everyone and stay rational. It's going to be a long road to tiperrary.

Sincerely,

investindinar

1. How do you think this will work?

2. OK let's say the NID goes up to say any amount. Then what happens with this new currency. As far as will it be worth the same value for all countries?:rolleye03

1. How do you think this will work?

Iraq will be invited as on an 'observer status' basis after the head knocking going on right now in Iraq dies down. I'd say in about 1 to 2 years, 2007 or 2008. After 2008, say 2009, Iraq will be invited as a full member with same privileges as all six other nations. By 2010, Iraq's currency will be included in the new GCC currency issue. NLT 2011.

2. OK let's say the NID goes up to say any amount. Then what happens with this new currency. As far as will it be worth the same value for all countries?:rolleye03

If the IQD/NID is floated by then on FOREX, it may get up above 10 cents or so. If not, it may still be in the mils, or just breaking into the pennies by virtue of the current 'flexible exchange rate' regime they have in place with a few modest and controlled revaluations by the CBI. After the new GCC currency is introduced, the GCC will then probably do a one for one exchange with the six other GCC nations first. Then Iraq's turn will come, and they'll get a 10:1, 20:1, or 25:1 exchange rate... just guessing. That'll make a $0.06:1 USD:IQD exchange for example, a $0.60:1, or $1.20:1, or $1.50:1 exchange, but it will still keep growing in value over the years to come.

I'm just throwing some numbers around as an example. I honestly don't think that the IQD/NID can get above 10 cents per dinar under the current currency structure with 13.275 T dinars or so. That's expecting too much from the currency. Especially, if they go to a 'full reserve system' because of the Sharia Law or Islamic banking law. They won't be able to get higher valuations than 10 cents per dinar unit, but the currency will be much more stable, and better suited for encouraging foreign investment.

After 2010, the integrated and aggregated GCC currency should become the dominant 'petro-currency' of the world. From that point forward, the days of the 'petro-dollar' will be over. The only thing that the GCC will need to do to get beyond $1.20, or $1.50, or whatever the exchange rate will be at point, is to demand that global buyers of petroleum/gas from the GCC pay to pay in the GCC currency. When global buyers start doing that, the GCC currency will get stronger and the exchange rate could go beyond $3 per GCC currency unit. At that rate, an investor in the old IQD/NID, will have the equivalent of $0.30 per old dinar, if he/she still had it and the new GCC to IQD/NID exchange were 10:1. It's going to be very tough for Iraq's currency to get beyond 10 cents per dinar as it stands now with 13.275 T dinar or so being printed. They'll have to start reducing that inventory eventually anyways in anticipation of adopting the up and coming GCC currency.

I hope that answers your questions.

It's sounds like eventually were going to be into the money!!!! BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!

If you think that sounds like serious money, just wait until the GoI, CBI, and ISX allow foreign investors into their stock exchange. Then it won't be a matter of when, but how much! That's why I said at the beginning of my earliest post, that this is a long term investment. At least three to five years. If it takes longer, like 10 years, then fine. I'll use my economic gains to fund my retirement. I don't have visions of myself riding around on a pimp mobile picking up girls half my age during the next year or so. I just want a nice quiet retirement where I can relax and live at a standard of living the top 1 or 2% enjoy. We can all do that, if we're patient and stop thinking the roof is falling every time someone slams a door. I hate these rumors about humungous revaluations. They're just a waste of time. I like facts, numbers, and statements from reliable sources, followed up by intelligent research and analysis. The rest is just nonsense.

Let me clearly re-quote myself, ""this is a legitimate long term speculative currency investment in an emerging market nation with excellent growth prospects".

Sincerely,

investindinar

i think sarah meant minor epidemic in relation to the amount of deaths compared to the black death.

U.S.Commander says Iraq crisis has passed. "But we all should be clear Iraqis remain under threat of terrorist attack by those who will stop at nothing to undermine the formation of the constitutionally elected government."
