Iraq president presses Jaafari
Sat Mar 4, 2006pm ET
By Nick Olivari and Faris al-Mehdawi
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's President Jalal Talabani said on Saturday that the nomination of Shi'ite Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari for a second term was an obstacle to forming a government of national unity.
Talabani also called for militias to join the U.S.-backed political process and said he would issue a presidential decree to convene parliament.
"Opposing Jaafari's nomination is not a personal issue," said Talabani, a Kurd. "It is in the interest of forming a government of national unity."
"The United Alliance has the right to nominate the prime minister but the parliament has to approve it," said Talabani.
As the largest block in parliament, the Alliance has the right to choose the prime minister, who must be ratified by a two thirds majority in parliament.

4 SLATES DEMAND DROPPING JAFERRI
Baghdad, March 2 P.1
Following the P.M Ibrahim al-Jaferri recent visit to Turkey, a political crisis is looming as some politicians fear the crisis may bring back efforts of forming new government to its very beginning.Four slates, Kurdish coalition, Consensus, Dialogue (Mutlag) and Iraqi Slate, have demanded the United Iraqi Alliance to change its candidate for PM position, the current PM Ibrahim al-Jafferi, with another one. A couple of politicians in the Kurdish and Consensus slates told As-Sabah that the four slates are making contacts for the said intension. The Alliance is engaged with the Kurdish slate by an agreement to form the government in case they won elections. The four-slate delegation would inform Seid Abdul Aziz al-Hakeem on their intention and would wait for his response.

Should have known, the politics continues. We should send back Paul Bremer to wake these guys up, "stop bickering politics and start running the country!"

Word on the street here in Iraq is that they want to can Jafaari because he wants to lean the government toward Iran while the Kurds want to lead the government toward the secularists (a la Kurdistan).

Just an old opinion....( and I thought it was over) Jaafari too close to Muqtada ....the government cant promote economic reform policies unless the militia is disarmed. My understanding is that the militias have a critical role in disbursing food and rations to civilians -- that could have very serious consequences later, especially in spreading violence. Under Jaafari's and Muqtada's leadership, the militias have been gaining strength financially and politically (this was apparent after the bombing in Samarra ).
On my mind: Delays in paying for fuel imports could be due to future strengthening of domestic currency which would reduce payments, since more dollars could be purchased with fewer dinars (dirty peg).
This article looks at potential candidates for PM. Interesting point of view and more thorough then what I've seen appear here in the States.

A 'white coup' in Baghdad
By Sami Moubayed
DAMASCUS - What happened in Iraq over the weekend was a neatly planned "white" coup, carried out by the Americans, Kurds, secular Shi'ites and Sunnis, on the United Iraqi Alliance (UIA) and its candidate for the premiership, Ibrahim al-Jaafari.
....
"The Iraqis have no choice but to choose their new prime minister from within the UIA, or with its blessing, as it is the only party, due to its numeric superiority in the National Assembly, with the power and authority to do so. Nevertheless, it still needs its candidate approved by other parties, as the UIA does not have the two-third majority that would allow it to pick its own candidate without worrying what other parties wanted."
