Sulaimaniya, Feb.2 (AKnews)- A leader from the Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) said his party has not occupied any governmental property.

Amid the cross-accusations of major parties and Goran, at a press conference the Kurdistan Region premier, Barham Salih, called on Goran to step forward for reform from themselves, “by vacating the governmental premises they have confiscated” if they campaign for honesty. Salih stressed most of the Kurdish parties have occupied the government buildings and land “illegally.”
Zana Rostayi, a leader from the KIG told AKnews all the governmental buildings the party occupied were returned to government in 2003.
Rostayi stressed his party backs any stride for taking back the governmental properties from political parties while he believed the KIG “was the first party to address the issue.” Meanwhile he accused the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) of confiscating “tens of buildings which are still under their tenure.”
The KDP and the PUK’s joint bloc, Kurdistani (majority bloc), has proposed a bill for recovering the governmental premises. The bill has passed through the first reading. However, reports suggest the bill lacks the number of the confiscated property and the political parties currently impounding them.
The PUK and the KDP, led respectively by the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and the Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani, are the two major parties in Kurdistan, which Goran believes the majority bloc is “best monopolizing legislative power to serve their interests and sideline the opposition.”
In his speech Salih did not deny the major parties have also confiscated government property. However, the only example he provided to justify himself was a hill and building confiscated by Goran for its headquarters and the only two media outlets it owns.
In response to that, Goran spokesman, Mohammed Tofiq Rahim, stressed Talabani awarded one of the buildings to Goran leader, Nawshirwan Mustafa in 2006.
As for vacating the premises, Rahim stipulated a condition. He said whenever the PUK and the KDP vacated “half of the thousands of donums” of land they have confiscated, Goran will give up the 122 donums it has been accused of confiscating. To substantiate his claim Goran spokesman mentioned a number of residential areas and plots seized by the two parties.
Mustafa was the former deputy for the PUK general secretary. It was only in 2009 when he broke away from the PUK to form Goran.
The KIG along with the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and Goran, constitutes the opposition. Nevertheless, only Goran has called for reshuffling Kurdish government and parliament.
