Barzani supports governmental reforms
Thursday, March 3rd 2011
Erbil, March 3 (AKnews) – The Kurdistan Region's President Massoud Barzani called in an address on Thursday for political reforms and holding provincial elections in his second public appearance in three days.
The people of the Kurdistan region are the sole authority in deciding matters and they have the right to express their complaints in a peaceful way, said Mr Barzani in his address aired by the satellite station Kurdistan TV, a channel affiliated with Mr Barzani's party.
“After thorough examination of the situation, we believe that grass-root changes can only be achieved by elections," he said, "where the people are the only authority (to decide)."
He said the people of Kurdistan had the right to demonstrate, "...but I urge you, for the sake of your own reputation and the reputation of Kurdistan, demonstrate peacefully."
"I am happy to see our youth are demonstrating peacefully and in a civilized way to present valuable proposals (to the government) and this indicates their awareness. Have no doubt that nobody loves that more than I do."
Barzani's public appearance comes as demonstrators in Sulaimaniyah city and the opposition groups are demanding political reforms.
In the recent demonstrations in Sulaimaniyah, 7 people were killed and over 100 injured when the peaceful protest became violent and clashes broke out between protesters and security forces.
