The Arab world needs to create at least 80 to 90 million jobs by 2020, says an international leader in strategic development.

To achieve this, Arab women need to be involved more actively in the region's economic development process, said US-based Global Leadership Team (GLT) chairman Sam Hamdan. "It is important to empower women so that they can influence the transformation agenda," he told the GDN. "Fifty per cent of the Arab population, mainly women, are not actively participating in the economic development programme." Mr Hamdan is one of the key organisers of the forthcoming World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (WSIE) to be held in Muscat from April 1 to 3.

WSIE aims at helping emerging nations achieve global competitiveness through initiative and innovation by creating practical solutions that address the most pressing issues facing emerging markets as well as those of the Arab world, he said. "The event will unite 800 of the world's leading innovators and entrepreneurs who will come together to improve the state of the global economy," said Mr Hamdan.
"WSIE has so far confirmed the participation of more than 100 renowned business, political and social leaders.

"A high-level delegation from Bahrain, including Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro, is expected to attend the summit."
WSIE will create a network community for innovators and entrepreneurs who share the focus on emerging nations.

Top representatives from the regional and international business community will discuss how emerging nations can best prepare themselves for global competition.

The Middle East region is witnessing phenomenal growth in non-traditional industries.

This growth will need to be sustained beyond the initial boom and therein lies the challenge, said Mr Hamdan.

"We are of the opinion that the new generation of Arab Leaders and young businessmen of the region will ensure the region continues to grow beyond just the boom," he added.

"We need to inspire and empower women to play a more active role in the economic and social development of the region."
The event is being sponsored by a number of key regional and international organisations that include the Kanoo Group, PepsiCo, Cisco Systems, and HP.

Mishal Kanoo, deputy chairman of the Kanoo Group, said his group remained committed to the progress and development of the entire region.
"The private sector in the region has a pivotal role in creating opportunities for future generations," he said.

The WSIE aims to provide a knowledge-sharing platform which will focus on key initiatives like improving infrastructure, empowering human development, enabling sustainable development, making innovations, foster better governance and legal reforms, sharing reports from leaders on stimulating growth ventures and exploring the impact of innovation trends on our future lives. GLT is a strategic leadership consultancy organisation with core competencies in planning, capacity development, alliance management, and market innovations. The summit's full programme and delegate or corporate packages for the full three days can be found at www.wsie.org or e-mail at registration@wsie.org.
