Iraq oil-rich provinces consider breakaway
Posted: Thursday, September 30, 2004

London

Three of Iraq's oil-rich southern provinces have discussed breaking away to set up an autonomous region similar to that demanded by Iraqi Kurds in the north, the Financial Times said.

The newspaper, quoting diplomats familiar with the plans, said officials from Iraq's second largest city of Basra had been holding talks with officials from councils in two neighbouring provinces -- Missan and Dhiqar.

The paper said the move reflected the three provinces' growing frustrations with Baghdad rule and a feeling they were being marginalised in new government institutions.

There was no independent verification of the report.

The newspaper said people close to the Iraqi government suspected hardline elements in Iran were encouraging the southern provinces to demand self-rule.

"The south has been desperately disappointed and they see Baghdad as continuing to leave them without representation," a western diplomat told the paper. "So they are working on ways to organise themselves to have more clout with the centre."

Any attempt to form a breakaway autonomous zone would meet fierce resistance from many Iraqis and could spark civil war.

Oil export revenues are key to Iraq's reconstruction and the three provinces provide a large share of the national income....

"Iraq's Kurds broke away from Baghdad rule at the end of the 1991 Gulf War, but many Iraqis oppose their demand to have their de facto autonomy officially recognised. The US has said the territorial unity of Iraq should be preserved. -Reuters"

Ouch, thats really not good. I'm a believer of the old saying, "If its happened once, it can happen again. Lets keep an eye on this one!

This would be when the UN would finally step in. In the beginning of the war, Turkey, Syria, and Iran was very explicit in stating that they would not allow the Kurds to have an independent nation.
The Shi'ites in the southern region will definately go with the will of Sistani who we already know is a great negotiator! He saved Sadrs butt a couple of times.
They need to restore the value of the currency to get things settled down. You will notice, the oil rich regions are the ones in discontent. That would be like Alaska wanting to break away from the US.

Namely Israel. Turkey, Iran and Syria wont have much to say now. The Kurds played their hand smart this time. Instead of relying on US help, the Kurds actively sought and got Israeli help. Israel now has many airbases in northern Iraq. Some even say Israeli planes are painted with Kurdish flags flown by Israeli pilots. The Merkva, Israels main battle tanks are already in Kurdistan. Just watch and see what happens

Given Turkey's own long-term conflict with Turkish Kurds seeking autonomy, many in the Turkish government and military are highly nervous that the Iraqi example of self-liberation may spread beyond Iraq's borders. Though not widely reported in the West, Turkish officials have been busy in recent days communicating with the Syrians and Iranians. Their common interests lie less with shared religion or politics than with their worries about Kurdish independence.

Let me answer on behalf of a few of our members so that they don't have a heart attack: Bush is an idiot, Iraq is in chaos, where is the UPS delivery service??

Seriously, States make sense to me-although it seems like we are dealing with idiots(terrorists) who want to scare the citizens and Americans. So I don't buy this sissy "blow the kids up crap."
