A member of the British Parliament, Robert Halfon said , in an article posted on The Commentator site that the Kurdistan region could be a model for democracy in the region.
"The fall of Saddam Hussein did not protect the Kurds from genocide only , but also it added to the area a free people yearning for democracy in the framework of the Kurdistan region." Halfon said In a part of the article,
"I have twice visited Kurdistan and have been informed about a lot of documentation for the genocide suffered by the Kurds in the era of President Saddam Hussein, in addition to the unstable situation in the region," said he , adding, " The Government of the Region could legislate laws themselves, and it had an organized army . It issued several decisions that established important economic development compared with the rest of Iraq. In addition to that, Kurdistan is totally free from terrorism."
"It is worth talking to what limit Kurdistan contains all of these conditions, where the draft includes several items that the regional constitution defends the rights of minorities as well as political rights and personal properties ." Halfon said.
He gave an example ,for that the situation in the Ainkawah district of the governorate of Erbil, saying "In Ainkawah, which is one of the major areas of Christian-majority in the capital, Erbil has been maintained the personal properties and Kurdistan's parliament recognized the rights of minorities such as Turkmen, Assyrians, this in itself is reflected in the elections system."
"We can say that Kurdistan is the only safe haven for Christians and Jews, at the time of committing massacres against them in the rest of Iraq and Iran and is receiving fleeing them in Kurdistan, in addition to all this, the regional president Massoud Barzani issued an invitation to them to stay in Kurdistan." He added.
He also noted that "Crimes in Kurdistan are often low compared with the rest of Iraq, and Britain coordinate with the Kurdish police in how to conduct the investigation and the use of legal means of extracting confessions from criminals, and the judiciary is independent in Kurdistan.
During the Arab Spring it was defending the rights of the demonstrating freedom in the region".
