Iraq parliament could convene soon
1 hour, 29 minutes ago
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's acting speaker of parliament said on Sunday he would call on the assembly to convene in the next few days, raising the possibility that political deadlock over a new prime minister may be broken.
"The Iraqi people are impatiently waiting for this issue to be resolved. When the parliament convenes it will be possible to start the steps to form a national unity government," Adnan Pachachi told a news conference.

Iraq parliament could convene soon
Reuters Apr 9, 2006 — By Michael Georgy
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's acting speaker of parliament said on Sunday he would call on the assembly to convene in the next few days, raising the possibility that political deadlock over a new prime minister may be broken.
Pachachi did not say whether the assembly would vote on a prime minister and there was no suggestion that Ibrahim al- Jaafari would finally agree to widespread calls for him to step aside as the main Shi'ite Alliance's nominee.
As the biggest bloc in parliament, the Alliance has the constitutional right to nominate a prime minister. It needs a simple majority to push through its candidate.
Jaafari won the nomination by one vote and he now faces public pressure from senior Alliance officials to step aside.
"The chances of Jaafari staying are getting slim," said a senior Alliance source. But not all Alliance officials support that view, underscoring the bloc's divisions.

Yeah, that caught my eye too. I always thought it was a 2/3 majority of the Parliament to dilute the power of the Shiites. If this has been changed to a simple majority then (A) the Shiites would be able to vote Jaafari in if they could convince the half of the Alliance that didn't vote for his nomination to support him or (B) it could vote him out because only half of the Aliance + 1 voted for him and the half not supporting him along with the Kurds and Sunnis could remove him or (C) the reporter got it wrong and it's still 2/3 majority and in that case scenario (B) could still happen.
However, they could just cancel the meeting altogether which would follow their usual pattern.
It should be interesting.

I think the reporter was perhaps talking about pushing the nomination within the bloc...he only won by one vote so that wasn't two-thirds. The two-thirds
applies when parliament votes on the nominee to be the official PM...JMHO.
