:) Oil Industry has Potential to Create Prosperity for Iraqis

Recently I was able to witness for myself the resilience and determination of the Iraqi people in the province of Basra.
Over the past months the Iraqi nation has faced huge pressures and horrible provocations by terrorists and armed criminal gangs who seek to plunge the country into a swamp of civil war and criminality. Yet Iraq's leaders have remained committed to democracy and its people have refused to be pushed into the abyss.
The future of the country lies in the hands of the Iraqi people. They have ample means to create greater prosperity. Their oil reserves are amongst the very largest in the world. They have the potential to provide the Iraqi people with long-term growth and jobs. Realising this potential is going to be one of the greatest challenges facing the emerging Iraqi government.
Iraq needs the support of all developed nations for a sustained programme of investment and reform. The UK will continue to provide financial and technical support to help the Iraqis rebuild their country - we have spent more than £460 million on humanitarian support and reconstruction so far. But as Iraq's first full term democratic government takes office, it will need to be able to draw on much wider support from Iraq's friends and neighbours.
