I'm pretty new at it too, but you might start with opening an Ameritrade account. It takes a few days for the funds to clear though, and then you can count on losing some while you learn to time your trades.

The minimum to open is $1000.
I might suggest starting with other than penny stocks at first though.
In penny stocks, a slight movement in price can mean big losses as well as gains.
Cut your teeth on something more stable, then move to the pennies.

BTW, it looks like a lot of people on this forum are pretty experienced at this. I like the risk tolerance of this group pretty well, and I've definitely made money on some of the recommendations.

Good luck!

A tool I use for selecting a potential trading candidate is a stock screener such as located on BigCharts

http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/

At the home page, from the menu bar at top, select "Markets" - you're taken to a new screen. Select "Stock Screener" from the menu bar located at the top. There are 2 drop down menu bars ... the default is set to NYSE. Four choices exist ... i select "Bulletin Board" followed by the "Look Up" button to the right. Then you have a list of best pecentage gainers for the day. I've created a portfolio watch list in my trading account with stocks i follow and give consideration to trade at an appropriate buying opportunity ...

there are some disadvantages as well as advantages when dealing with penny stocks. The advantage is that you can make good money with small profits. The disadvantage is that in a moments notice..if even that much notice...stock can plummeth.

Using http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/ (http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/) and finding the biggest gain, what are the chances that the next day the company is still gonna move up????

research the stock, check all the news, read what the analysts have to say,
look at it's complete history. Research, research, and more research!
It's not 100%, but it does help you make an informed decision when buying
a stock.

it's like everything else in life, there are no guarantees, but it's a lot easier to bet with 4 Aces than with a pair of deuces or 4 cards you can't look at.
