Iraq PM climbs down as parliament set to meet
20 April 2006
BAGHDAD - Embattled Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari on Thursday climbed down from his insistence he would lead the next government, saying his fate would be decided by the country’s dominant Shiite alliance.
“Mr Jaafari told the alliance today that it was up to it to decide whether it feels it is necessary” to have him as the next premier, “which means he is no longer insisting on the post,” Maliki told reporters.
“Now it will be the alliance which will decide.”

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Embattled Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari cleared the way Thursday for Shiite leaders to withdraw his nomination for a second term, a step that could break a months-long standoff that is blocking the formation of a new government.

Shiite lawmakers planned to meet Saturday to decide whether to replace al-Jaafari, who faced fierce opposition from Iraq's Kurdish and Sunni Arab parties.

''The alliance is leaning toward changing (the nomination). The majority opinion is in favor of this,'' said Bassem Sharif, a lawmaker in the seven-party Shiite coalition. http://www.newspress.com/Top/Article/article.jsp?Section=WORLD&ID=564720360684389474

But the deputy parliament speaker, Aref Tayfour, told reporters the session would be held Thursday, though it would likely be brief. ''It is almost certain that it will adjourn and be held at the beginning of the next week, most probably Sunday,'' he said.

Here's another article on I.Q. But this Kurdish leaders response is priceless and speaks to their "attitude", "The U.S. wants a government more than we do," said Mahmoud Othman, a top Kurdish leader. The poor Iraqi people are being slaughtered and they do not see this?????????? http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/news/14383231.htm
