Iraq's oil minister announced plans Wednesday to build Iraq's largest oil refinery in the western region of Kurdistan.
The three-year project is expected to cost about $1 billion. Currently, Turkish operations on the border reportedly affect Iraq's ability to export fuel, Peyamner Web site reported.
"There are important projects in the oil ministry for developing the existing fields in this area, including building a large, new refinery in Kou Senjaq in order to provide fuel for the area," Husayn al-Shahristani said in a news conference.
"This refinery will be among the first new refineries to be built in Iraq with the capacity of 70,000 barrels a day," said Shahristani.
