WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Iraq's oil minister told President George W. Bush Tuesday that he expects oil production to increase through the end of the year from a current level of around 2.5 million barrels a day, a White House official said.
Minister of Oil Hussein al-Shahristani was part of a delegation meeting Bush Tuesday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, said al-Shahristani "indicated that oil production is up."
"It's now about 2.5 million barrels a day," Hadley said. "He believes that that will continue to increase through the end of the year."
Hadley said the oil minister briefed Bush on steps the Iraqi government is taking to protect infrastructure and safeguard oil for export from the north of the country. And he discussed the need to upgrade refining capacity "so that Iraq does not need to import refined products, but can make refined products in Iraq itself and therefore cut down on the budget that is required, otherwise, to import."
Also briefing Bush, Iraq's electricity minister Karim Wahid al-Hasan said electricity production also has increased and is now over 5,000 megawatts.
