Iraq’s economy has huge potential, but also faces major pitfalls. The country is rich in oil for example, but it only provides money. That revenue needs to be used in a strategic plan to diversify the economy, so that it can have sustainable and growth. Otherwise Iraq can fall victim to the resource curse where the economy goes up and down with the international price of oil, while other industries are pushed out. That can also undermine its developing democracy, because it breaks the social contract between the public and the government since the latter does not need the former with all the cash generated from the energy sector. Baghdad has said that it wants to broaden the economy, and develop its private sector, but it is making very little progress so far.

No, Saudi Arabia is not close to the dependency upon oil as Iraq is. Read this article:

Iraq is the second most oil dependent country in the world only after Angola.

Duhhh....The entire world is moving into Iraq with trillions of dollars!...I guess the largest companies in the entire world....and everything from some of the smallest countries to the largest countries.....are now players'...I guess they all forgot to read the bad news before going and sinking the motherload in there huh?...lol....

On another note...What I actually love about these kinds of articles...is everytime Iraq starts making any type of progress, and it seems that the government is making a little headway...here comes the negative press...while world record setting monetary events are happening in Iraq...and usually we hear nothihng in the mainstream media...go figure...

There are too many of these, but this a sampling of a few things happening in Iraq that the mainstream media either blacks-out or ignores...how odd?....

You know Iraq could build all kinds of things and get lots of outside investment and still be oil dependent with a state run economy?
