Parliament calls for closing Sharqiya TV, al-Zaman newspaper
Baghdad, Oct 16, (VOI) – Iraq’s parliament presidency panel called on Monday upon the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to take punitive measures against the Iraqi Sharqiya TV and al-Zaman newspaper.
“Parliament presidency panel rejected the way the Sharqiya satellite channel and al-Zaman newspaper covered the parliament passing regions bill into law,” said the parliament presidency panel in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
The Sharqiy TV and al-Zaman newspaper described the new law as “a step towards a divided Iraq” claiming that four parliamentarians, of the Iraqi National Slate, contributed to pass the bill to a law, the statement added.
“The parliament presidency panel expressed upset and anger at how the coverage in Sharqiya TV and al-Zaman newspaper was far from impartiality and professionalism in a way that would incite tension in the Iraqi street,” said the statement.
The parliament presidency warned media, including Sharqiya TV and al-Zaman newspaper, of pursuing a style that incites violence when they deal with the Iraqi events, the statement added.
