Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?

Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame for mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees
It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail

I just read that article on Drudge. What a weird deal.
My brother in law has a few hives and lost over half this past winter.
Maybe al Gore should take on the cell phone companies

I reckon I should get out more often, I've yet to see a bee talkin' on a cell phone ! If they're doin' it in California the rest of the country will follow suit soon enough, I hear bees aren't allowed to smoke in public places there !
Well, I can varify that thers a few bees left, as I got stung on the arse while I was pruning my tress thank you very much....!

How do you figure that? It's not a joke or humor but is a current event.

I read a while back that computers were wiping out the Mongolian Tick Tick and there would soon be a world crisis. If I remember right, Al Gore was heading up a commission to set in place plans to rid the world of computers.

Iread this article with interest because I am a bee keeper. I have had bees for 10 years. Starting out with just 2 hives my hobby soon consumed my time with as many as 18 hives. I have since implemented some old Amish tricks to keep my bee populations at around 6 hives.
That was until this winter. I went into the fall with 6 strong hives and lost 3 in the month of November. I checked the ones that hadn't disappeared and the all looked really healthy. I added more honey for thier winter hibernation and checked them again in January. All was well. In February I didn't see any sign of bees, like poop on the snow near the hive so I checked them again on the next warm day and they had all gone.
So for the first time in 10 years, I don't have bees.
It might be of value to point out that if your food didn't come from the minerals in the ground, it was polinated by bees to make it grow. It is estimated that 2/3 of what we eat is the result of polination. remember the birds and the bees talk from when you were a kid?
Seems pretty interesting.

A JOKE?!?!?!?! Unimportant!?!?!
RS, i am so sorry about your bees! do you have any ideas as to what is happening? i have heard several possible explanations: GM foods, new pesticide that causes disorientation, fluoride in the water table, and now cell phones...
this is definitely something to be concerned about.

no. they are being systematically abducted by aliens to polinate a different world. my house has plenty of bees still.

At our cabin in the North Carolina Mountains north of Asheville, we have all our 6 bee hives, not one loss of bees, also stranger still, there are no cell phone towers in the area. Lets hope it stays that way. ]]]no. they are being systematically abducted by aliens to polinate a different world THIS IS NOT AN UNPLAUSABLE THEORY, I HAVE ALWAYS HEARD THIS WAS A FARM PLANET

didn't mean to joke about it , something is taking out the bees, don't know what but it's not good. In Texas we are, additionally, facing extinction of red ants, horny toads, and jackrabbits. To top it all off, we had snow on Easter ! This global warming sucks !!

well, this is no less plausible than it being due to project blue beam, or perhaps chemtrails.
and, wolverine, you do know i wasn't talking about your post, right??

Dr. Mercola's Comment:
http://www.mercola.com/2007/mar/22/are-gm-crops-killing-honeybees.htm
You are about to witness the first large-scale repercussions of the dangerous, world-wide, and unregulated experiment on your health with genetically modified (GM) crops. The problems that will result due to a loss of honeybees are much greater than a simple shortage of honey.
When this story hit the news a few weeks ago it is likely you heard about it, but very few people connected the dots, including me, until a few enlightened individuals pointed out the connection, and then the light bulbs clicked on.
The inevitable agricultural and economic catastrophe that will result is a stark reminder of how complex, fragile and interdependent our biosystem really is. The loss of one plant, one animal, one species can cause potentially devastating repercussions that can wreak havoc on the entire system for years, decades, or worse even permanently.
Genetic modification is, basically, playing fast and loose with this system, with no real idea what the results will be. It's taking parts out of a smoothly-functioning machine and replacing them with new, untried, and untested parts. Maybe they'll work better. But if they wreck the whole thing, there is no replacement. This is the only biosphere we have. Is it really worth the risk?
That is why it will be essential for you to take action and VOTE with your pocketbook. Avoid GM foods like the plague that they truly are. Recognize that they have the potential to destroy the human race. IF you realize that I am confident you will realize how serious this issue is and will act responsibly and appropriately.

This is a serious problem...don't doubt the dangers of cell phones for one minute. There is a product out there that you can put on your cell phone and other devices(very inexpensive) to neutralize the radiation. Dr. Carlo(mentioned in this article) packs the product 100%. Let me know if anyone is interested in hearing more about it.

I don't mean to bash your post, but the Radiation (Radio Frequency) you are referring to is the means by which your cell phone communicates. It seems like you would render the device useless by neutralizing the radiation. I work in SATCOM and it seems to me that there is a lot of senseless paranoia associated with cell phones. I don't think the transmitters have enough amplification to truly harm people. Bee's may very well be effected by the towers, but really the frequencies used and the amplification level are perfectly safe for humans. On the other hand, the time I accidentally got fried by an open waveguide was probably NOT SAFE!!! :)

Yes, alot of people think that cell phones are safe. I said it neutralizes the radiation going into your brain....didn't say it kept the frequency from carrying the signal.
Read Dr. Carlo's book. He is the expert, not me. I just know that I have those little chips on my phone and on my kid's phones as well as other "radiation" emmitting devices in my home.

I agree with MOM, I purchased a product (swiss made I believe), it has a chip in it and sticks to the cell phone, you can tell immediately the difference. The heat and radiation is absorbed by the chip. I have seen the independent studies and I am convienced the increased in brain tumors are a direct cause by cell phone use.
As for the Bees, Cell phones have been around since the early 80's with no problems to the bees. The new GM crops have come out the same time the Bees started dying, and as said in the article, the same gene in the GM crops was found in the dead Bees.
Moral of the Story: Don't screw with Mother Nature. (God's creations).

I appreceate your concern.
Bees are a fasinating thing to study. I'm not prone to some of the theorys about GM foods or new pesticides,
I think it is interesting that I have kept my bees on my farm up until the last two years, were they where at least a mile from any cell towers. But I did move them closer to town two years ago and then one of the neighbors had a cell tower constructed about 1500 feet from where they were being kept. This just seems to fit some of the claims I've seen.
