John Cole notes that the rate of Coalition fatalities is down to its lowest level in almost a year. While two weeks can hardly be called a trend, this is an important metric that will merit continued watching over the coming weeks to see if the elections have had some concrete effects.

This is the area I most like to watch because as the security situation improves the economy can get rolling imo.

Recruitment drive for Iraqi Army draws thousands

By U.S. Army Sgt. Lorie Jewell, Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq Public Affairs

SOUTHERN IRAQ – An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 men arrived by foot, bus, and other vehicles by sun up Feb. 14, at an airfield outside an Iraqi Army base in an effort to join Iraq’s army, officials said.

Of that, approximately 5,000 made it through a screening process that led them onto the base, which is home to several thousand Iraqi Soldiers and a contingent of U.S. service members, officials said. Most will be transferred to other bases in Iraq to supplement existing units.

The process was a result of the largest recruitment effort for the Iraqi Army to date, said U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Woodley of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq.

During the screening process, potential recruits were given a literacy test, physical condition check and questioned about prior military service. Once inside the base, they went through a medical screening and received uniforms, boots and other military-related clothing.

Of those who were turned back, or did not make it through the screening, leaders told them to return for another recruitment drive.

Many recruits showed up with proof that they were serving when Saddam Hussein’s regime fell and they were subsequently released from duty. Former Iraqi Army Maj. Hussien Ali Kadhun, 48, traveled about an hour and a half by bus to rejoin.

“I want to serve my country and fight the terrorists,” he said through a translator.

Ali Kadhun said he graduated from a military college in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in military science. He returned to school to study law shortly after his release from the army in 2003.

Another former Soldier, Hakeem Shaial Hassan, 27, worked as a farmer after his first stint in the Army. It took him nearly four hours to get to the airfield with a group of friends, looking for a job to provide him and his family with a better income. New recruits earn 420,380 dinars a month, or the equivalent about $212 in U.S. dollars, officials said.

“I am proud that I made it,” Shaial Hassan said through an interpreter. “But I am sad that my friends did not. They will have to go back home and tell their families they did not make it.”

U.S. Army officials were expecting a little more than 6,000 potential recruits. U.S. military members from the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy were joined by several civilian security personnel and a few hundred Iraqi Soldiers stationed at the base. Several dozen Iraqi Soldiers arrived at the base the day before and went right to work early the next morning, said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Mark Harvey, base commander.

420,380 (NID) / 212 (USD) = 1 USD = 1982 dinar or 1 dinar = .0005

I love our military, but this math is very sloppy.

As more Iraqis have cell phones (over 1.2 million so far), more are easily able to phone in reports of terrorist activity. This has led to more terrorists getting caught, and more attacks being aborted by police action. Moreover, many of the terrorists forget that cell phone calls can be tapped, and users quickly located."

""Back to the story: there were seven other soldiers that came home with me that day. We flew into JFK, and we were talking on the way back: What's going to happen? What will we be facing? Is it going to be like the Vietnam era, are there going to be people spitting at us?

"We didn't know. We had that much trepidation about it.

"We get into JFK, we step out of the breezeway into the main terminal, and directly in front of us was an elderly gentleman carrying a bag. And he immediately stopped, set his bag down, and the first thing we all thought was, 'Oh, Lord, here we go already.' He just stopped and looked at us for a second, and then tears came to his eyes and he saluted us.

"And -- I'm breaking up now [editor's note: with tears] -- every one of us just started crying like babies. Everybody in the terminal -- I kid you not, at least two to three hundred people -- just started clapping, spontaneously. To me, it was so much worth what we were doing, to realize that people over here actually get what we were doing. We weren't over there because it's fun. We're over there doing a job.

"When I saw the Super Bowl commercial, I just started bawling like a baby again because that was something totally unexpected. We had no idea that people actually appreciated what we're doing, from what we see on the news. We thought we were going to come back and get eggs thrown at us. It was so refreshing to know that what we were seeing on the news is just a bunch of garbage that's being concocted by the media, that 99.9 percent of the country doesn't believe that way. "

Police capture Iraq insurgency leaders
19/02/2005 - 14:51:42

Police have arrested two leaders of the insurgency in Iraq, including a top aide to Iraqi al-Qaida leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, it was announced today.

In western Baqouba, police chief Abdel Molan said his forces had arrested Haidar Abu Bawari, also known as the “Prince of the Holy Warriors”. He was described as a top aide to al-Zarqawi and the man behind the insurgency in Baqouba.

The Iraqi government also said it had arrested one of the masterminds of the insurgency in the northern city of Mosul, who was also a former member of Saddam Hussein’s Baath party, an announcement said.

More on the Ramadi operation (operation River Blitz) underway:

Operation River Blitz is designed to target insurgents and terrorists who have attempted to destabilise the Anbar province by terrorising the populace through wanton acts of violence and intimidation," the US military said in a statement.

"We were asked by the Iraqi government to increase our security operations in the city to locate, isolate and defeat anti-Iraqi forces and terrorists," said Major General Richard Natonski, commander of the 1st Marines expeditionary force.

Ramadi - a city of several hundred thousand people - Fallujah and the whole of Iraq's vast western Anbar province, which stretches to the borders with Jordan and Syria, have been a hotbed of the insurgency over the past 18 months.

Iraq’s Garden of Eden returns to life.

After Saddam was ousted as president in the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, Iraqis began breaching dams and allowing water to flow back into the marsh. About 20 percent of the original marsh was reflooded by last March and thousands of birds have returned. So, too, have thousands of displaced people.

Richardson said the quality of water flowing into the marsh is higher than expected and the response of wildlife has been swift and positive. Plant life is returning to many areas and some people are resuming a way of life that has endured for thousands of years, he said.

I have always enjoyed his work as an actor, in Lethal Weapon and other films, but in my eyes, and hopefully others. The scary thing is that this type of anti-government sentiment is contagious, and chances are that more actors and actresses will follow suit. I voted for Bush and I am proud of the US's involvment in Iraq, but I believe that Glover's hidden agenda is to raise US anti-war sentiment. Is it possible that Glover is doing this because of his South African roots, perhaps he is not the good American that American's believe he is!

Bert,

Ever check out Belmont clubs blog? Highly regarded by many.

"Wretchard at Belmont Club has his own take:

The available data suggests that the Sunni insurgents are still capable of showing strength within their strongholds and menacing traffic on the Baghdad streets. However, even within their bailiwicks, their capabilities are not decisive. They have been unable to impede or even delay the political goals set by the US as evidenced by their failure to stop the January 30 elections. Moreover, they are unable to project any significant combat power in Shi'ite and Kurdish areas. Faced with the loss of oil revenues, a growing Iraqi security force and the gradual depletion of their stored weapons and suffering a terrible attrition rate their relative power is irretrievably on the wane."

I hope to be back at my pc this afternoon and will try to round up some more war related news.

BEIRUT -- Iraqi and U.S. forces have come close to capturing Islamic militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi at least twice since mid-January, according to Kurdish intelligence officials.

In each case, Iraq's most wanted man escaped shortly before raids on his hideouts, the two officials said in phone interviews from Iraq. Even though al-Zarqawi fled, Iraqi and U.S. officials were pleased by the accuracy of the intelligence that led to the raids.

Stash,

The more stable, the more the dinar appreciates!

HMMMM

For many Europeans, the war was a reckless, provocative, dangerous, lawless piece of unilateral arrogance. But it has nevertheless brought forth a desirable outcome which would not have been achieved at all by the means that they advocated. So, it's not productive for them to continue to say, "told you so, told you so" in the face of what more and more people around the world see as a successful outcome (democratic, free state of Iraq) in spite of their disagreements with the process that got Iraq to that point.

The new European friendliness towards the Bush administration; Kofi Annan's pitiful attempt to claim credit for the Iraqi elections; Senator Clinton's newfound optimism about Iraq; the Ba'athist recent despair -- each chronicles erosion of original position that we shouldn't enter Iraq.

And is good news for Iraq, and IIF visionaries!! :happy64:

Thank you for reading it Jen. :)

Bagzz, Thanks for adding those links and comments.

From your 1st link:

"We are for the first time really united on Iraq," said EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. "That without any doubt is going to be very important to the meetings we are going to have ... with President Bush."

Have you noticed since the world witnessed the Iraqis vote in great numbers at risk to their lives, that they can no longer in good conscience not support Iraq more fully?
How could they not show more support now?
Their international credibility would even be less.
I think that is a very big deal.

As for Canada sending only 30 soldiers, that is taking a public stance and will make them a potential target. No small thing.

Our side is growing stronger while our enemy is dwindling in size, power, public support, and time imo.

The top aide captures do seem to get old..
But I think he is really running out of "top aides"..

Remember these aides beheaded people and murdered many.
They are off the street forever. Probably valuable intel was seized.

But even if newbies do replace them their lack of experience would cause shortcomings.

Funds are drying up, weapons are being seized, more countries are throwing in support. There is much to be cautiously optimistic about imo.
I look forward to when the troops can come home with a job well done to the glory they deserve.

Years from now the history books on this will credit the first election as a major turning point.

The last thing i remember reading about it is that Iraqi judges and prosecutors were being trained.
I don't think the prosecution is no where near ready to tackle the 20+ lawyers that Saddams wife hired to defend him.
