View Full Version : The Ultimate Dong site
Hello,
In the past 36 hours I've been asked so much about our little friend, the dong ! Dong this, dong that... how much for your dong... etc.
I've also been asked about various types of dong... of the metallic, cloth and polymer substrates. It shows old wrinkly dongs from years gone by, post-1987 which are still legal tender in Vietnam.
As for renaming the currency well it could have been the dung !
So, without further adong, I mean ado.... this site I have found shows lots of dongs ! If you have a super sensitive net-nanny, turn it off because every second word is 'dong' !
http://art-hanoi.com/collection/vncoins/2003.html shows the 5 recent coins in large detail. No wrinkles here folks !
http://art-hanoi.com/collection/vnpaper/poly.html The recent polmer dongs... yes, no batteries included !
http://art-hanoi.com/collection/vnpaper/last.html These are the final release paper (cloth) dongs.... wrinkles abound. They are being replaced by same-value polymers.
Last but not least... the 5 million dong note...

Relax it's just a bearer's cheque :)
Dong On !!

Where can Dong be purchased?
Everyone seems to vouch for Ali at www.nammoney.com (http://www.nammoney.com)
I just put in an order there, myself. Delivery will be after May 1st, Ali says, as that is when he receives his new shipment.

Does anyone think Vietnam will loop the Dong?

You mean LOP, in my personal opinion yes they probably will. I'm sure there are experts here willing to debate that for you...

So if they lop if I am correct you really don't make anything other than your investment back? The old currency is turned in for the new currency and you basically end up with new money at the rate that is about equal to what you spent to buy the old currency for? Is that right or wrong?

Let's say you bought $1000 worth of Dong at a rate of 1 USD = 16,000 Dong.
That equals to 16,000,000 Dong. Now if they LOP their currency by say three zeros, you now only have 16,000 Dong.
As you can see you can still make a profit off your initial $1000 investment, but you might make a lot less after a LOP and also depending on how high the RV is.
So let's say that the Dong RV's at a rate of 1 Dong = .10 USD Cents. That would give you $1,600 witch means that you made $600 more on your investment. Now I'm no expert on the LOP or how high the Dong might RV at, so don't take my word for it. That's just my current understanding of a LOP...
Not sure why they'd lop considering the actual value at this moment... and seeing the polymers were a tad expensive to print...

I get that the amount gained is a big difference. Per your example if I bought 16,000,000.00 dong and it revaled @.10 per dollar would that add up to 160,000.00 usd. If that were the case that would be a great investment where as a lop would net me 15,000.00 usd which is still a winning investment in my book. So either way you can make some great money right? Yes or no? Thanks for the reply.

I purchase from a dealer in Nam. Prices are nice and notes are UNC. I'm currently holding 9MM and selling on Ebay. Placed an order for another 10MM which will be here by the end of this week.
Next week I'm ordering another 20MM.
Let me know if you need any.

Does anyone think Vietnam will loop the Dong?
I think it will be a combo lop/reval like AAD's example. They can't do a straight reval to 3 cents. There are millionaires in Vietnam (based off USD value of assests). For some reason.... call me crazy... I don't think we're going to see the world's first multi-trillionaires any time soon. And if the dong reval'ed to 3 cents w/o a lop that's exactly what we'd see.
50 billion (Warren Buffet) to > 1 trillion (some dudes in Vietnam) overnight..... a 1900%+ increase in the top spot of the world's richest person.... Sorry I don't see it happening.
VND screams LOP + reval. If it does do a straight reval it won't be to 3 cents but far lower. That my humble opinion.

As far as a place to buy dong..... I'm a bit biased myself :).

If/when it revalues, I believe that it would have to become something that they open up to world wide trading. So, at that point, it should be exchangeable at any bank that deals in foreign currency, right?
I've been looking into this 'lop'/'reverse split' thing, and came up with some interesting articles about what happened with the turkish lira awhile back.
Seems very possible, and very likely that if anything, something similar would happen with the dong. We would still make some $, or for those of us who've purchased recently off of ebay at the inflated prices, (those sellers have already made their own reval occur it seems from rumors), we would at least make our original invesement back, and hopefully a little more.
Hmmmmm one way tickets to Hanoi from $299 AUD :)
Kuwait is a bit more exxy !
I'm not ruling out travelling if I have to.... to cash in.
I think we all would given the choice.
May be cheaper for American investors to charter a plane !

What web site do you check to see the value of the dong? ie. Dinar = Central Bank of Iraq
Any other good web site. Thinking about purchasing 5 Million...

I called Wells Fargo and they said they could order it but could not guarantee if it was polymer and I could not specify denoms. What a drag. I really wanted some dong to keep my dinar happy.

Either of these will gave you the rate. Same info, different URL's:

http://www.centralbank.vn/vn/home/index.jsp
Note 16.124,00 to them, is 16,124... not 16.124 to us. That's just how they write numerals over there.

AM I READING THIS RIGHT????Since September 2006, local banks have experienced US dollar surpluses for the first time with massive dollar inflows into the booming stock exchange and sharp increases in FDI attraction. This situation has put pressure on the State Bank, as the ultimate purchaser of local banks’ dollar surpluses, to revalue local currency.:happy64::happy64::happy64::happy64:
