(Warning: Rated "R" for Rant....)
I keep reading that our current military "surge" in Iraq is our "last chance" for a military victory. How many times have you heard that? Can anyone tell me why? I've never heard GWB say this was going to be our final effort. I've never heard it from General Petreaus, or any other member of the military.
But I do hear it endlessly in the press, and from our hapless congressmen who have a political stake in our country's failure in this war.
I read a lot of military-blogs, mostly because I can't trust any of our media outlets to provide any good news anymore. And every one of them says that we are winning this thing every day. Every single one of them says we prevail every time we engage the enemy. But all we see are the setbacks on the news, and they are amplified by the idoits running congress. We don't see the rebuilt schools, communities, roads, bridges, infrastructure and political progress that is happening constantly (yes, despite the fact that we don't have our precious reval, any reasonable person must admit extraordinary political progress).
To the contrary, there is every indication that our enemies are feeling the squeeze. Violence outside of Baghdad is at its lowest point in the war, and inside Baghdad, there are many indications that the "surge" is working, even though to this point only 3 of the 5 planned brigades of U.S. troops set to take part have arrived and engaged. In fact, it seems the only hope our enemies have gotten in a while is from Senator Harry Reid, et al.
So why is this our "last ditch effort" as it is portrayed? If the surge fails to bring total and incontravertable victory, why can't we just do what all victors do in wars; learn, adjust, move forward, and prevail?
Love to know your thoughts, either way.
