VietNamNet Bridge – The retail market is poised for rapid expansion, according to the Ministry of Trade, with chain stores like Co-op Mart and Big C intensifying competition for consumers' dong.
Companies are rushing to open stores across major cities and provinces. The Saigon Co.op has opened 16 supermarkets, and operates 10 convenience stores under its Co.op Mart trademark, while Viet Nam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) has 17 supermarkets and 19 clothing stores.
Intimex Co currently has eight supermarkets, while Dong Hung Trade and Service Co has 10 and operates a handful of Citimart convenience stores.
Ha Noi Trade Corporation (Hapro) is concentrating its efforts in the capital city with five supermarkets and numerous convenient stores. The local competitors are one issue, but it is the larger foreign players that are posing just as many a challenges, says Le Thien Nga, an external relations representative with Hapro.
Foreign retailers, like Big C and Carrefour, tend to hold an advantage in terms of technology and managerial experience, says Nga, while locals understand Vietnamese consumers better and know where the best land plots are to attract customers.
Even with stiff competition, "our company plans to open an additional 10 supermarkets in Hanoi and northern provinces. We also want to establish 50 convenience stores," says Nga.
Other trends adding to retail market growth have been franchising, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Companies like G7, Hoang Corp and Pham Trang Ltd are franchising to create greater demand for their products and expand their distribution networks.
