......True, Iraqis paid a heavy price for the dramatic change that has come about in their lives, the many fruits of which they are now set to savour. External intervention helped them free themselves from tyranny and taste freedom. Before month-end, they will have their own government, duly elected and installed under a democratic process that was unknown to Iraqis until a year ago.
......Meanwhile, the US army is stepping up its efforts to train the Iraqi army and police. The fighters in Iraq can be neutralised by Iraqis only. While much of Iraq is peaceful, capital Baghdad and some more towns continue to be troubled by violence. Police estimates are that the level of violence has dropped significantly since the January 30 elections. Bombings, kidnappings, beheadings have to end if life there should become fully normal. That will, and should, be the first priority of the new government.
Dear readers, admittedly, the Iraqi people are taking charge of their own destiny. Freedom is taking root in Iraq, and sending the right signals to the region, that is at the crossroads.
