Mansfield soldier rides a Buffalo through Iraq

AL ASAD, Iraq -- U.S. Marine Cpl. Charles Norris III patrols the streets in an "armored Mack truck," searching for improvised bombs. It's a dangerous job in a dangerous country, but Norris, 26, wouldn't have it any other way.
The Mansfield native is about midway through his second deployment in Iraq. He and his route clearance platoon have found seven IEDs -- improvised explosive devices -- in the last three and a half months. "We take them out of the ground and dismantle them," Norris said.
Norris called the News Journal from Al Asad on Tuesday. As the wind blew in the background, the Marine said the temperature had reached 115 degrees that day, making it one of the cooler days. Norris noted he gets to ride in a Buffalo, an air-conditioned vehicle. Unlike the regular Humvee, the Buffalo is built to sustain an IED attack.

THE MILITARY HAS ORDERED THOUSANDS OF THESE VEHICLES AND THERE ARE MORE THAN TEN PLANTS IN THE US BUILDING THEM FOR OUR TROOPS. THIS WILL ULTIMATELY REPLACE THE HUMMER. ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF THE DEATHS OF OUR SOLDIERS IS DUE TO IEDS. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN TESTED TO BE VERY EFFECTIVE AGAINST THE IEDS.
Australia built something like this. Wonder if it's a Buffalo ??
Oh yes and people from Mansfield are pretty cool :)
Did some research... Aussie version is called the Bushmaster.

WHAT WE ARE FORGETTING IS THAT THE ENEMY WE ARE FACING IS NOT YOUR EVERYDAY ENEMY. THEY ARE VERY SMART, THE HAVE A VAST NETWORK AND RESOURCES, AND THEY IMPROVE AND MUTATE AS THEY GO.....LONG AGO, WE NEVER THOUGHT OF ANYTHING DESTROYING AN ABRHAMS M-2A2....NOW, YEAH, THINK ABOUT IT TWICE, THE BOMBS ARE SO POWERFUL THAT BLOWS THE TURRET AWAY EASILY.
THEY WILL FIGURE SOMETHING OUT....I HOPE NOT THOUGHT....
THERE ARE MANY MANY VARIANTS AND CONFIGURATIONS OF THESE VEHICLES....AND ALL OF THEM ARE CURRENTLY BEING USED IN IRAQ.. I FIRST SAW THEM IN OCT 05, WHEN I FIRST DEPLOYED THERE...I GUESS THEY ARE HIGLY EFFECTIVE....

To me, the sophistication of these weapons is a direct result of Iranian involvement. As for Iranian agents - time to press Maliki to say if Iranian agents are caught in Iraq supporting terrorist activities, they will be executed - there needs to be zero tolerance on this, democracy or not.

I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT SCORPION..BUT I HOPE THAT THE INSURGENTS DON'T COME UP WITH MEANER BOMBS TO DEFEAT THESE VEHICLES.....

To me, the sophistication of these weapons is a direct result of Iranian involvement. As for Iranian agents - time to press Maliki to say if Iranian agents are caught in Iraq supporting terrorist activities, they will be executed - there needs to be zero tolerance on this, democracy or not.

We need to start fighting this war with the same tactics. Tell Iran, "for every terrorist bomb that kills someone, we send a cruise missle into Tehran." We need to start making them fear us. I understand this "public opinion" carp, but we're fighting a 21st Century enemy with 20th Century tactics. Doesn't make much sense to me.

I talked to a guy that was driving one of these and got hit by an IED. It was daisy chained 155 shells. Although the vehicle and occupants survived the blast, he said the concussion inside was still extremely painful!
The bad guys are adapting their strategy. They are aquiring "shape charges" from Iran. These Shape charges direct the power of the blast in a very direct method. Deadly as hell to any vehicle.

No need to invade...if they find foreigners supporting terror, it's instant execution...forget about due process...this is not America with a functioning police force that has been around for a very long time (and even they are overwhlemed)...this is a country that NEEDS to be secured...shoot first, ask questions later...and it needs to come from GoI
Iraqi justice needs to be swift and harsh...they did it with Saddam and company (a couple of lynchings) - we need more public executions, especially the Iranians...
Time to play up the nationalistic fervor a bit and foster a little Iran vs. Iraq...

Do you know how sensative an IED is? How many pounds of pressure does it take to set one off? They used pressure plates from scales. Plates from scales can rated for certain weights. I watched a 7 ton truck blow up after 3 hummers drove over it.

Some of those explosives are old and been in the ground for awhile.
