Al-Sadr loyalists say they're returning to parliament

Associated Press - July 17, 2007 5:53 AM ET

BAGHDAD (AP) - Lawmakers loyal to a firebrand anti-American cleric, who've been boycotting Iraqi parliament sessions for weeks, are having a change of heart.

The backers of Muqtada al-Sadr (mook-TAH'-duh al SAH'-dur) say they're returning to parliament after officials accepted their demands that a bomb-damaged Shiite shrine in Samarra be rebuilt. It's been bombed twice, once in February 2006 and again last month.

The Sadrists also want the government to secure the road from Baghdad to Samarra, which passes through Sunni insurgent areas.

Boycotts by the al-Sadr bloc and the main Sunni faction have stalled work on major "benchmark" legislation that the US is demanding.

Is this a good or bad thing?

BAGHDAD - Lawmakers loyal to anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr said Tuesday they are ending a nearly five-week boycott of parliament sessions after officials accepted their demands for rebuilding a Shiite shrine damaged by bombings.

Boycotts by the al-Sadr bloc and the main Sunni faction have stalled work on major "benchmark" legislation demanded by the United States.

Nassar al-Rubaie, head of the 30-member bloc, told The Associated Press that "we have suspended our boycott as of today after all our demands were met and the parliament voted on them."

Al-Sadr's followers walked out of parliament last month over the government's inability to restore a major shrine in Samarra that has been bombed twice — once in February 2006 and again last month.

The Sadrists said they would return if the government developed a plan to rebuild the shrine and secure the road from Baghdad to the city, which passes through Sunni insurgent areas.

"We welcome the return of the Sadrists bloc to the parliament to resume their work," Acting Parliament Speaker Khaled al-Attiya said.

Thanks Adster. This could be great news. Now lets get that HCL passed so we can all get on our way. Maybe they realized that if they don't get back on the ship it will cruise without them.

I could be sitting on the fence... not sure about this one :)

I should have added time will tell, and hopefully they'll be given the big A should they hinder any progress... hmmm that covers most of them though !

Seriously,

These guys I DONT TRUST! If they throw a wrench in the works the first time, and move not to support but impeed work getting done as they have previously, their coming back means what to us now.

I said it before, Maliki needed to fire who he needs to and hire who he has to. Now that Sadr is no longer in the picture (but still active to be sure) lets see how things go.

I am ready, but Sadr is an unknown to me.
