View Full Version : What Iraq is doing to UK Troops!...

Iraq sucks! It's causing our troops to turn to alcoholism and for what....for a bunch of idiotic Ministers who take holidays whilst people die for them and quote it's their "constitutional right"...
We have only around 5000 troops in Iraq and if the stress is causing 625 (1 in 8) to turn to the bottle out of stress and we only have 500 (yes, only 500 according to a top UK general) troops left in reserve in the WHOLE of the UK, you do the maths. And NO we don't have a recruitment problem in the UK, we have a Govt who are downsizing the military and pulling funds from them whilst our troops are thinly stretched all over the World....
The U.S. 100,000+ troops in Iraq and their Govt puts more money into Iraq.....
We need our boys back NOW before irreparable damage is done to our Military capacity....
The Iraqis can go to hell for all I care now. They already have shown they don't want to be rich or anybody else to for that matter given their behaviour. Let them kill each other and then anybody that's left might actually form a half decent Govt over there....
Anyway here's the article:
http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-1278387,00.html
"Shocking research has found that one in eight soldiers are likely to suffer from stress, family troubles or severe alcohol abuse as a result of the strain of serving in Afghanistan or Iraq.
Doctors found that those who had served in Iraq or Afghanistan for more than 13 months in the last three years - as one in eight soldiers have done - were more likely to develop post traumatic stress disorder.
The doctors also warned severe alcohol problems increased the longer troops were deployed.
They are calling for each operational posting to have an explicit duration.
The military operates what are called "Harmony Guidelines" - these are supposed to limit operational duty to two six-month tours every three years.
The Ministry Of Defence admits 12% of the Army has breached that.
The heaviest workload is on specialist skills including medics, intelligence gatherers, engineers and helicopter crews."

And thats just the UK troops, imagine what kind of crap storm we are going to get all of our boys and girls home.
Extended tours are not such a good thing without extended leave.
Who agrees?

I say the Allied troops do what they did in World War I when they ALL stopped for Christmas Day and the enemies were drinking, eating and playing soccer with the Allies....
Let's cease ALL Military operations whenever the GoI cease Parliament. I NEVER heard of a Govt/Parliament ceasing to work in wartime conditions in ANY war except this one.....Watch how the country goes straight back into the pits of hell when our troops take a week off....let alone a month....

Perhaps it might help to find some answers in these fact's, that its costing us £80million a month for the war in Iraq....have we really got this type of cash to throw away every month?, the total amount being spent every month by both America and the UK is £5billion a month, thats £2,000 every second, our cut works out to £31 a second so that makes the US £1,969 a second or about $3,780. So combine this with our increased Taxs ect, ect, and the Forces cut backs, which as we know is not the only cut backs we got here.....who are we now borrowing money from??
One of President Bush's top budget advisors Lawrence Lindsey was fired in 2003 when he estimated that the war would cost £100billion, a figure considered at the time far to high.

Another point here, if the Foot and Mouth outbreaks takes hold and I hope to hell it will be contained we will need as many troops as possible to help out.
Iraq is a hell-hole. No wonder Prince Harry was not allowed to go. Our soldiers are pawns in what was always a disengenuous adventure spurred on by a couple of liars.

If the Iraqis would show the slightest inclination to try and change things to help themselves I'd say it's worth it. But after seeing a report by a retired general who said the problem with the surge is that the Iraqis aren't surging and parliament taking a month off in the middle of a war makes me think it time to call it a day there. We've done all we can to lead them to water, however....

I agree 100%, with the floods and now the possibility of Foot & Mouth again we really need more than 500 troops in the U.K., especially while nothing is getting done in Iraq and 5000 troops or more are putting their lives on the line for a bunch of lazy tossers on holiday whilst OUR country suffers.

No, approximately 5000 in Iraq and ONLY 500 IN THE MAINLAND UNITED KINGDOM i.e. Britain (a fact leaked by a TOP General only a week or so ago)....
It might be funny to you but we haven't got ANYBODY left in the event of something major happening in our Homeland. You're brimming with National Guard and Military and have the Billions to throw money at it everyday. Money is being withdrawn from our Military all the time and recruitment is being minimised for lack of money...

As quoted by one of our Governmental health sites:
"Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is an infectious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, in particular cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and deer. The disease is serious for animal health and for the economics of the livestock industry. While FMD is not normally fatal to adult animals, it is debilitating and causes significant loss of productivity; for example milk yields may drop or the animals may become lame. In young animals it can be fatal on a large scale."

You don't know what Foot & Mouth disease is but you're an expert on the U.S. economy? It's possible you and nut house are having a personal recession but our country is not.
Here's the answer to one question: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD, Latin name Aphtae epizooticae), sometimes called hoof-and-mouth disease, is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal viral disease of cattle and pigs. It can also infect deer, goats, sheep, and other bovids with cloven hooves, as well as elephants, rats, and hedgehogs. Humans are affected only very rarely.
Do your own home work on what a recession is.

the stablity of the US Economy is in a very bad place right now.
Although indicators (btw, review the stats for the CBI and determine if that would pass freshman stats or an accounting GAAP audit) might show its 'okay', the undertow (ie: what really holds our economy up) is just a few brush strokes away from painting itself into a corner.
As to illustrate, look at inverted yield curves, CDOs (hint: compare "marked to market" with the actual buys/puts) the yen carry and the CBOT options on futures. Although we (the unwashed masses) are doing our best to keep the US good, the wizards of wall street have engineered a Tacoma Narrows Bridge and put us commoners right in the middle of it... instead of us being on solid ground, a single strong gust can now destroy us. We have been made weak by the greed of Broad Street.
To summarize, our fiscal house is in bad shape, thanks to those who manipulated the markets for their personal gain. In good and bad times alike, its a good idea to pay down your debt and have some plans ready for a worst case scenario...one is closer now than it has been for a long, long time.

Good God man, pull yourself together. War is hell.
I'm sure there are troops who've taken the brunt of an IED who would love to trade places with someone suffering from alcoholism.
The point of troops is that these are men who put themselves into the most dangerous places on the planet to fight for what is right. They sustain all manner of injury and pain.
As a society, we do not PITY them, nor do we TELL THEM NOT TO FIGHT. Rather, we must HONOR THEM, and exalt the military person above all other classes in society.
They are the "Guardians of the State". Read Plato's "Republic" sometime...

You can joke about it, but I can also attest that the economy and our currency are in poor shape...keep watching as the middle class gets smaller and smaller. Government is spending of credit from other countries like China, our citizens are buying beyond their means with credit...look at what just happened with the foreclosure increase.
All is not well.
And to chime in on the actual argument, I didn't start drinking until I got back from Iraq, my friend who is still a Marine staff sergeant until he receives a medical discharge, has been diagnosed with PTSD and he can't sleep at night. It's no joke, but it seems some have tried to pass it off as no big deal in this thread.

LMAO. You forgot some of the catch phrases like "Jobless Recovery"... oops. Unemployment is at levels unheard of throughout the world.
America has 9 million households with 1 million dollars net worth!
1 in 30 people belong to a millionaire household.
People freaking SWIM to this country from Cuba in order to wash dishes and work their way up. The Cuban community in Miami is a hardcore republican group that is making serious cash in the land of plenty.
Everyone wants in here. This is where its at. Liberals and moan, but they CANNOT NAME A SINGLE BETTER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD?
So, I give you the challenge : name the better country.

I think he was saying that they minimized recruiting because they can't afford it, not because they don't have willing, able-bodied people.
How did they afford it back in the day?

Wow, you just have it out for me, huh?
Okay, first smart guy, of course we are the richest nation in the world. Thanks for being the scholar and pointing that out while missing the point of my post. How about you compare our own economy to our...own economy. How about you do some...research. I guess that would be my challenge to you. Explain how our economy is so much better right now than it ever has been. Oh, I forgot Mexicans and Cubans want to come here, so everything is peachy, best it's ever been...
U.S. NATIONAL DEBT CLOCK
The Outstanding Public Debt as of 05 Aug 2007 at 08:48:21 AM GMT is:
http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/debtiv.gif
The estimated population of the United States is 302,621,336
so each citizen's share of this debt is $29,571.62. The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$1.43 billion per day since September 29, 2006!
I guess this is just a meaningless figure?
Check it out, it's fun to hit refresh! http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/
2005 - Meanwhile, the United States borrows deeply from China to sustain its national debt; as of April, China's central bank held $230 billion worth of U.S. Treasury bonds. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-06/16/content_451996.htm
2006 - For how long can the global economy endure America’s enormous trade deficits — the United States borrows close to $3 billion a day — or China’s growing trade surplus of almost $500 million a day?
These imbalances simply can’t go on forever. The good news is that there is a growing consensus to this effect. The bad news is that no country believes its policies are to blame. The United States points its finger at China’s undervalued currency, while the rest of the world singles out the huge American fiscal and trade deficits. http://www.globalpolicy.org/socecon/crisis/tradedeficit/2006/1003stiglitzfixecon.htm

Does thinking that America is heading in the wrong direction make me less patriotic? Does questioning the government make me less patriotic? Does thinking that we need to revert to the Constitution and what the founding fathers preached make me less patriotic?
This may be thoughts spilling over from another thread, but geez, those last two should make me more patriotic if anything. I joined the Marine Corps in a time of war, yet in some threads here I'm considered a traitor almost, because while I support the troops, I'm not for the very war I participated in...I'm not whining or playing for attention, just scratching my head here.

I say the Allied troops do what they did in World War I when they ALL stopped for Christmas Day and the enemies were drinking, eating and playing soccer with the Allies....
Ummm -
Maybe not such a good idea, General...
