The London-based Arabic newspaper Al Quds is reporting in its Tuesday edition that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld secretly met former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein during a surprise visit to Iraq two weeks ago.

The purpose of the meeting, says the newspaper, was to seek Saddam's "assistance" in calling off the stepped-up attacks by Iraqi insurgent forces. http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/5/3/115810.shtml

Is the US trying to make a deal ? They want Saddam to squelch the insurgents in return for freedom in exile or to make him the leader of a puppet regime?

I don't understand it.... our troops fought long and hard with too many casualties. What is the point of all of this?

No they wouldnt and couldnt set up a puppet regime! But they can show Saddam "repenting" on the TV screens, begging insurgents to put down their arms. Problem is, the foreign terrorists who are the problem, dont give a damn about Saddam or anyone else. It would be interesting, but wouldnt work, in my opinion.

interesting Farquar! I dont know what to think of that! :drunk: Thats easy.My opinion: Many, many murders are being committed by Sunni's(Saddams people) against innocent Iraqi's. And Rummy was sent to cut a deal with the devil(in order to stop what can open up into a civil war). However the devil knows his day's are numbered and will soon be banished to hell. Since he does'nt care about anybody but himself, he will gladly take many soul's into a lost eternity with him (knowing he can stop the Sunni's but since he lost Iraq, will not!!). My opinion, anyone else? Al-Queda is another story.

AGREED !

But it might help, at least with the saddam loyalists factions of insurgency. Perhaps he was offered some creature comforts for his last days before he's sent home !

I kinda doubt we offered to exile him. I was also thinking even if he tried to curb the violence, I don't think he'd make that much difference. Like someone else said, it's not just his people doing these things.
I don't know what the answer is here, but in my OPINION, Suddam is not worth the money it takes to keep him there awaiting trial.

ok i can't sit still on this.
fact 1--newsmax got it from a London based Arabic paper named Al Quds. (Quds?)

fact 2 --Saddams nephew was captured--it was Saddams half brothers son.

fact 3--I saw some articles that states Saddams lawyers say there is a 'hit' out on Saddam by our military.

fact 4--Saddams fate is in the Iraqi hands.

i think if Rummy did go, he may have went to reassure Saddam there was no 'hit' put out on him.
but thats just my opinion--we shall see how it goes. and has anyone even verified he went? i haven't seen anything about it yet.

Perhaps we should give Saddamn (spelt wrong on purpose) back to the people he hurt the most and ask them what special deal he should get.

More whispers in the wind, but not completely unrealistic. Article post on the forum awhile back about the Iraqi Gov., wanting to keep Saddam alive. Logically this is a big mistake. As long as he is alive, Saddam's loyalist will do everything in their power to destroy the new Gov to get him back in power.

Even if a deal was made, I doubt the promises made to Saddam would be kept. Words of wisdom, wash the back of your enemy until the problem is clean, then drown him!!!!

The Pentagon has dismissed as drivel a report in an Arabic-language newspaper saying U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld met with Saddam Hussein in jail.// Sorry folks, I suppose- what do they say, Believe half of what you hear and none of what you read!!// Right TCB>............. http://story.iraqsun.com/p.x/ct/9/cid/c31d0aaa23b24a75/id/18914bc0e0396423/
