Syria doesn't intend to float Lira

DAMASCUS, July 3 (KUNA) -- Syria does not intend to float its US-dollar-begged local currency, Lira, said central bank governor Adeeb Mayyaleh Sunday but added that the Lira might be linked with other currencies in future.

He said this includes "expanding the basic monetary policy instruments to include treasury permits and bills to enable the CEntral Bank of managing the liquidity and defining the interest rate in an objective manner ..." Also he referred to ending control on financing trade transactions for commercial purposes in a drive to organize the exchange market on sound basis compatible with the openness requirements.

He said Syria adopted a series of reforms to push forward the economy. The two-day conference will discuss role of Central Banks in establishing the monetary policy and the criteria drafted by the international organizations.
