Just wanted to hear opinions on the United Nations. I did a speech in a public speaking class last year about how corrupt and pointless the UN has become (or always has been) and now the oil for food scandal........hmmmm what do y'all think of this organization?

I think you're right, they've become a bloated beaurocracy, sand bagged by thier own mis-management and corruption.

Please tell us more about what you found out during your research for the paper/speech...

well I will have to go back in look for it, but in a nutshell the UN DOESNT DO ANYTHING. "oh sure they do, they have peace keeping missions in Africa' hahah that's laughable, they can even protect themselves against blade weilding congo muraders as I think I stated in another post. They just sit there and make money and bash the U.S. who by the way gives the most amount of money to the UN. screw em.

I don't know if it is applicaple, but i served in kosovo which was a NATO mission. It was a peace keeping deal and there were an almost equal amount of troops from other nations. When I was there I actually felt that I was doing something for the good of the world. The country was allowed to head in whatever direction it wanted to go, we were just there so as to minimize the death, pain and suffering of the people while the democratic process took its course.
When I have seen UN troops at work.... they really dont do anything. They are peace keepers as well and i think that they attack the agressor if there is only one... but i think that if it is an all out battle, i think they keep their distance. i'm not sure though.

I've heard of the oil for food scandal but i dont know too much about it. whenever I do get a chance to read something I dig around and try to find what other dirty little things the current administration has gotten into.

Hey TT, whats up? Always up for some debate!

Yeah the oil for food scandal is a purely UN scandal, nothing to do with Bush or Clinton or anyone. It's terrible.

LOL! :) In fact, the current administration is probably a victim of the scandal.

In quick summary, Saddam was supposed to sell oil only for food and medicine for his people. Instead, he skimmed off anywhere from $10 to $40 billion worth to pay for his military and for massive bribes. Among the big bribes were to representatives of the UN, France, and Russia, all key opponents of Iraqi Freedom, giving people reason to think that the Oil-for-Food program was the real reason they opposed the Iraqi invasion. Saddam was quoted by Tariq Aziz as saying he didn't believe the invasion would happen because France and Russia would stop the Americans.

there is always the PAST .....like Civil War...........uh......Clinton, Reagen, Carter......GeorgiavsFlorida.........AAAAAAhOoh, Civil War. Maybe we can debate back and forth whether Robert E. Lee was really beaten by a superior general at Gettysburg or whether he suffered an unexpected lack of judgment at the most crucial moment in the war. ;)

Or whether US Grant was a better general or president? Okay, so that one isn't much of a debate. ;)

Or debate why there has never been a movie made about Elmira prison or fort deleware but there has been one made (and rightfully so) about Andersonville prison.......to the victors come the spoils I reckon!
