May 2014 saw almost as many casualties in Iraq as April despite almost 100 fewer attacks. The cause for the decrease was the insurgency having to re-load and re-supply. It was able to make up for the loss in activity by launching a wave of car bombs that left behind a huge number of dead and wounded. This has happened before and represents the current flow of insurgent activity in Iraq right now as security incidents climb for a month, then go up and down the next, and then increase again. Despite these fluctuations the pace of violence has remained relatively stable so far this year.
