Despite the Hard Conditions in the Country, Samera Pharmaceutical Overcomes its Stumble and Presents a Model for the Reconstruction of Iraq
It is most probable that the reconstruction of Iraq is a complicated process, especially with regard to the reconstruction of institutions, of the scientific nature, and developing them in a way that enables them to catch up with the global development. The medicines industry is an example of that.
Before the last war, and despite the complicated conditions that the country is experiencing, the Iraqi workforce has worked hard to re-operate the company, on scientific bases that cope with the reality of the development in the world of pharmaceutical industry at present. The city of Samera (120 km north of Baghdad) is well known for being a historical and religious center, indicated through its famous spiral minaret.
The company has recently achieved great revenues. Its sales are estimated by 18.189 billion Iraqi dinars (a dollar equals 1500 dinars), between July 2003 and the end of November 2004.
In an interview with Al Hayat, Dr. Ibrahim Abbas Te'ma, the company general manager, has pointed out, "The Company has been affected by the bad security conditions that the city of Samera is experiencing. Its production has decreased. Then, it returned to work and the average of its production has increased again. It has achieved profits through adopting enlightened economical policies, which include signing contracts to supply with raw materials, packing and wrapping machines, etc."
