View Full Version : Adults only thread

I've noticed a few times we use language not appropriate for some people.
That will happen from time to time. I have a suggestion if it's not too much trouble to set up.
Could we have a tread setup in the lounge called whatever, "Adults only"
that would require the person trying to view gets the login screen again and login into this with existing IIF user name and password.
This would :
1. prevent kids or ladies just thread hopping from accidentally seeing these
2. provide a place for some of these really good arguments/conversations
I don't want anyone exposed to something unappropriate, but I think as adults we sometimes express ourselves in manners that are only for adults.
I myself would either not read if so inclined or read and join in discussion if interested.
Anyone else feel the same?

That was why I originally started the "Off the Wall-No rules thread" But its not being used as it should have. Except for unrelated funny pics once in a while

i agree!!!
way too often we get side tracked and away from the point of this forum.
if we could just take it "outside" i think it woud be...just spiffy.

Though this is nice to brainstorm....it seems that all that needs to happen is for people to carry themselves in an adult manner. As it is, the members that tend to get graphic and vulgar will not take their tantrums to the chat room. I don't see them respecting any option out there. Also, the particular title is not very upstanding in and of itself...this is not an "adults only" forum. That seems a little over the top and sets up possibilites of the less mature to use it as a porn venue (in speech).. Like you, i would not use it, so the option may be viable. I just think that if the animals on this forum don't respect us enough to be civil and post in proper threads or take things offline now....another thread is just something else for them to ingnore and abuse.

That's what gave me the idea. Problem is you don't have to relog into it,
so people can accidentally hop into it. This way kiddos and others won't accidentally happen into it.
I know some of us get into really heated discussions and that should be fine here only.
And it wont hijack treads and submit people who don't care to read them have to sift thru them. We could say hey, go to Adults only , you #@!$#

I'm glad people are continually brainstorming ideas. I'm with Mike on this one. Let's not forget why this forum was created: to further your knowledge of the dinar and all that's related to it. The politics forum has become quite heated at times. The Lounge has been abused a time or two. Those two forums are "extras" in my mind and danpeg was kind enough to create them to help out with "getting off the topic". This adults only forum is a good idea, Bluelake. But I personally feel like maybe that should be completely separate from IIF ... not even affiliated. I would hate for us to loose our focus for the main purpose of IIF. I'm sure there are MANY places like what you are suggesting out there.
I think the rules are quite fair. I simply don't see what the problem is with following them. Lack of respect? I understand that there are some that use language in a manner that I choose not to, to get their point across. The chat room is very much underused, imo.
My suggestion is simple. If you cannot practice self control and act civilized, go somewhere else. We cannot please everyone. This is a large group of people. Judging by the number of members and guests, people know this is a unique place. I'd like for us to strive to keep the integrity it has struggled to maintain for the past year. This place is a step above the rest. I say let's help it stay that way.

Maybe the mods could just delete the posts with the bad language, and repeat offenders would be banned. It would be much easier.
Also, I think part of the problem is the wrong people are the mods. It seems that the mods are members with some of the greatest insight, but not necessary around all the time. If you got a few people who hung out all the time on the board to be mods they could monitor other peoples activities.
Is there an option to have a language filter on this forum. That would be another ideal.

MODS
Please delete this thread. Even the thought of thinking differently causes so much anxiety.
No! I kindly disagree! I think it's great how you can share your ideas on here. Just remember, there's going to be many different opinions shared. Tis OK, Bluelake. I see the point of this thread and I understand what you are suggesting. I'm just offering an alternative point of view. I surely hope I didn't come across negatively in my previous post. That was not my intention.
This is the purpose of the Suggestions Forum ... put an idea out there and see what members have to say.
After re-reading this thread ... I'm not sure that I sense anxiety on here. Maybe I'm missing something. :rolleye03

NYSE, yes having the mods just delete the nasty stuff would be an easy fix,
however I can't agree the wrong people are the mods. They all have different
opinions just like the rest of us, and I feel for the most part do a good job. No
one can be on here 24/7 to check every word.
RET: yes, I agree, if people would just follow the rules of the forum this problem wouldn't be a problem :happy26:
"As it is, the members that tend to get graphic and vulgar will not take their tantrums to the chat room. I don't see them respecting any option out there."
Mike, I can't agree with you more.
"Let's not forget why this forum was created: to further your knowledge of the dinar and all that's related to it."
RET, you hit the proverbial "hammer on the head"
FYI Everyone, moderators donate their time. Monitoring activity requires alot reading.

I think it's a little childish to ask some one to remove something that you started just because its not going your way.
One would think that a person like me would be all for this idea, but I'm not. The reason that I'm not behind it is because you have some very immature and irresponsible people one here that would go in there for the sole purpose of cursing and being rude. While I would like nothing better than to be able to express myself freely, let a zinger fly every now and then. I think that it would not be worth having to filter through all the garbage to get to the meat and potatos of a solid, emotional adult argument.
Additionally I think that part of the problem lies in that the rules are not applied evenly accross the board. It seams that mods are a lot more forgiving of certain people than they are of less than popular members.
If action was taken every time some one is found to be guilty of an offense then things might be more under control to the point where an Adult Hang-Out would not be needed.
I think the mods have perfomed well over all and I appreciate that they volunteer their time. Treat them with respect because they are what keep this forum as good as it is.

well, I think basically this is a waste of time and mod attention. I'm a little disappointed because I was addressing complaints I see all the time out here and that is pretty much ignored. I'm not advocating a room for people to just go and swear and act like kids.
My main points were/are:
1. prevent kids or ladies just thread hopping from accidentally seeing these
2. provide a place for some of these really good arguments/conversations

Blue you have a good idea, but the majority dont want too do it that way.
The majority rules, unless Danpeg makes a final ruling.
Dont worry about what the girls or kids see, most of the mods or members will edit their own posts.
I recommend everyone that is mad count to ten and re-read and edit their own typed out responses before you hit submit reply icon!

When someone registers at a web site, there is no way of truly confirming their age. All they have to do is click on "I'm over 18" or enter a valid birth date.
This forum is about investing in Iraq. Alhough some diversity has been tolerated, we must remember the younger generation might be viewing our threads. For that reason we've insisted that people "keep it clean".
If people express themselves in an appropriate manner then there's no reason for our children not to read adult conversations and learn from the expierence.

I agree. I often tune in at work but try to keep the screen shielded from onlookers. Usually it's because of the Avatars. I dont wont the folks I work with to think weird thoughts of me. The Avatars often reflect the sense of humor that we all share. But some are a wee bit gruesome, especially to someone just stopping in. But, with that said, a thread entitled "Adults Only" would be so intriguing that as a kid you wouldn't stop me from getting in. I would have had to see what was behind the scene.
Sorry but I agree that it would not work the way you want.

Well said, we certainly don't want to create temptation. Besides, we're all here to talk about economics, politics and the global impact of freedom in Iraq. Anyone from 8 to 80 should be allowed access.
