U.S. President George W. Bush and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met in Washington amid efforts to encourage the Middle East peace process, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported April 24. During his visit in Washington, Abbas held talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.S. lawmakers, and asked that Israel stop building settlements on disputed territory so peace talks can continue. Bush plans to travel to Israel and several Arab countries in May.
