WASHINGTON - With the deadline for
Iraq's constitution rapidly approaching, the U.S. ambassador to the country dismissed the suggestion Sunday that Iraqis may need a few more weeks to iron out differences.

"The Iraqis tell me that they can finish it and they will finish it tomorrow," Zalmay Khalilzad said on ABC's "This Week." "There are options, obviously, should they need it, but at this point, my information is — and I've just come from a meeting with the Iraqi leaders _that they intend to finish it tomorrow."

I believe he is the main deal-maker now. Its all about money and how much the US is willing to Underwrite.

Seems things have been set up within the last week for Iraqi to rub elbows as journalists and news reporters for themselves, about themselves... :p

Telecommunications : U.S. transfers Baghdad press center to Iraqi control
Friday, August 12th 2005

The United States transferred control of Baghdad’s international press center to the Iraqi government August 9 in what U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad characterized as a step for Iraq toward building the institutions of democracy. “The role of information — objective facts, impartial analysis, fair presentation of competing views — is at the heart of the deliberations of democratic politics,” Khalilzad said at the handover ceremony.

The international press center has been a hub of activity for Iraqi and foreign journalists working in Baghdad since it opened in February 2004. Upon transferring control of the center to Iraq, the United States supplied it with additional computers and office equipment, tripling its initial capacity.

Telecommunications : Independent news agency set to launch in Iraq
Wednesday, August 10th 2005

An internet news service developed by the Reuters Foundation and supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI) will become Iraq's first independent and commercially viable news agency, run and staffed by Iraqi journalists.

Iraq has alot of their own news that is monumental and historial going on..This seems the appropriate time to hand them the honors of reporting it themselves..... :p

The word on the street in Baghdad is that the US is putting pressure on Iraqis not to include a provision for direct regional allocations of oil revenue (a key demand of Kurds and Basrans). The reason for this is that they want all the revenue on the books of the central government to guarantee existing debt and enable the IMF to make the maximum new loans.

Seperately Noah Feldman said, in an interview about economic aspects of the constitution a few weeks ago, that "The IMF or the World Bank are in a position to impose certain conditions as a prerequisite for aid...[but] we’ve seen this throughout the world, that various decisions that the government needs to take tend to have more buy-in from the public if they’re perceived as having been made domestically rather imposed by the international organizations that control inflows of capital."

Good Karma

The Puzzle is Solved
Here's the most interesting article I found comparing Post WWII Japan and Germany with the current situation in Iraq. Reading this article, it made me think that most of this was based on a well researched study that was conducted, and now adopted for Iraq. This article is so dead-on with the latest developments, it's scary! No wonder we started hearing about the "marshall plan." I truly believe it was based on this study. Especially reading an excerpt below:

What Iraq needs, like Germany in particular, is stabilization. The new Iraqi dinar, like the Deutschemark needs to be an initially undervalued, credible and convertible currency. For the new dinar to succeed, however, Iraq needs to formulate sound monetary and fiscal policies, preferably under the supervision of the IMF.

Some here are stating they are going online in October now. However I too am a little confused. I called on Thursday to find out about a wire to them and asked about wiring more. I was asked to please get it there by the 16th because their system would be down for sometime. Seeing as the last time I wired money it took 2 weeks to credit my account, I decided not to go with the luck of the draw. Sorry I did not ask why their system would be down, I presumed to do maintenance on the new site.

"Under a sign reading 'Constitution voter registration,' local residents queue to register for the Oct. 15 Iraqi constitution referendum, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, in Tikrit"

2 months away and they are already in line registering to vote in Oct.
It looks like turnout could be high. :)

What a blessed day that will be...

they are already moving ahead to registration time.....if that does not speak volumes for what the people want...nothing will. What a beatiful day we will witness in history when this day comes.

The United States remains the last best hope for a mankind plagued by tyranny and deprivation. America is no stronger than its people - and that means you and me. Well, I believe in you, and I believe that if we work together then one day we will say, ``We fought the good fight. We finished the race We kept the faith.'' And to our children and our children's children we can say, ``We did all that could be done in the brief time that was given to us here on earth."
-- Ronald Reagan
