BAGHDAD (http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/08/06/africa/ME-Iraq.php#): A senior Iraqi official says that the parliament is likely to postpone debate over power-sharing in the northern city of Kirkuk until next month because of lack of agreement among the ethnically based parties.
If so, that means parliament is unlikely to approve a bill providing for U.S.-backed provincial elections. That bill has been stalled because of differences over Kirkuk.
The parliamentary official says the Shiite-led government will ask for the postponement until September after the summer recess.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue is sensitive. Parliament went into recess last week but reconvened in a special session to tackle important legislation.
