In case your refrigerator is on the blink, you should note the bill says nothing about passing any savings on to the consumer.
Among other goodies in the Senate version:
- Two separate tax breaks for film companies that produce movies in the U.S. (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/United+States): the cost, almost $500 million.
- An extension of tax rebates to Puerto Rico (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Puerto+Rico) and the Virgin Islands (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/U.S.+Virgin+Islands) on rum duties: Another $192 million over 10 years.
- Six pages of earmarks to benefit Alaskan fishermen who were victims of the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster. That break, worth $239 million, is clearly aimed at winning the vote of U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Don+Young), who voted against the bailout package last week.
- A $10 million credit to help employers defray the costs of storing the bicycles of their employees who commute to work!
You can't make this stuff up.
To be fair, there are several provisions of the bill that will undoubtedly help millions of people.
Hurricane disaster relief breaks, for instance, and better deductions for costs of higher education. The most costly, at $62 billion, is a provision that will save some 24 million middle-income families from being hit this year by extra taxes under the IRS (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Internal+Revenue+Service)' dreaded Alternative Minimum Tax.
Still, why did Senate leaders clutter up a bailout bill that has infuriated millions of Americans with tax breaks that will produce a net cost of an extra $112 billion?
The answer is simple: Because they could.
Because they know America's corporate leaders are desperate to get the financial system off life support. This was the Senate's chance to win a longstanding battle with the House over tax legislation.
"There's been a battle for years with both houses having alternative tax bills," said Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Manhattan) (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Charles+Rangel), head of the House Ways and Means Committee (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/U.S.+House+Committee+on+Ways+and+Means).
House Republicans and conservative Democrats long ago agreed on a pay-as-you-go rule. Under that rule, all tax breaks must be matched by cuts in spending or by new revenues.
In the Senate, they love to dispense bigger portions of pork, and they rarely worry about how to pay for it. Until this week, the Senate had failed to get the House to agree to its list of tax breaks.
By tacking these breaks onto the Wall Street bailout, Senate leaders expect to peel off enough Republican House members to pass the entire package.
Wall Street gets its bailout. The refrigerator makers get their tax credit. We pay for it all - and then eat leftovers.

It seems that under the likely guise of creating jobs, Hollywood will be greatly rewarded for their diehard and determined mission to get Obama elected. Looks like all the Pamela Anderson and Matt Damon crap will be rewarded...by us the taxpayers. I am just glad they will be getting millions in paychecks increased by my tax money...that makes me so proud.

Hey,

I thought you were one of the ones the other day saying we had to have this so fast? Until this passed today, the market had a rally of +340, and closed - over 150.

The faster congress shoves crap through, the bigger the screw job. OR--- Maybe this extra 120 BILLION was a punishment for the house not passing it first.

Guess who lost again?

Now, will someone please tell me where the "bailout" helped us peon citizens?

The market ended DOWN more than 800 points, including the gain early in the week of 400+, leaving us with a net drop of over 1200 points by congresses "fix- it" plan.

Rather then let the market fix itself they are looking to do this huge, IMO, the political version of throwing a 'hail mary' pass in football, and I really wonder what will happen if this thing doesn't work. If the markets don't turn around what happens? If it ends up doing nothing, because the people who are financially supporting this country, i.e; you and me, don't feel any more confident with dumping money into the market or as jobs decline there is less spending...

I wonder if in ten years we will be talking about how if we had just left it alone it would have worked out but after the gov. dumped so much money into it and it tanked there was nothing left to fix it and that is what caused the second great depression or ten year recession.

That is the best description I have come across yet. LOL and it won't work because the gov can never get anything right the first time. This is the first of 3 I suspect and the second one will be before 2009

History, my friend, has already answered this, and our congress and all who supported this boondoggle were looking "trains" when God was passing out "brains".

We were the last country to come out of a recession in the 20's, only we were blessed with calling it the "Gteat Depression", because government fixed us then, like they did TO us this week.
