After an initial rejection of the Saudi initiative to invite Iraqi leaders for a meeting in Riyadh, there is a significant change of heart among two leading Iraqi leaders.
Kurdish Regional Government President Masood Barazani, and, most surprisingly, Muqtada al-Sadr, distanced themselves from Nouri al-Maliki’s rejection of the initiative.
The invitation is timed to take place after the ‘Eid al-Adhhaholiday, which falls on November 16.
The Kurds have warned al-Maliki that he should not act as if he was guaranteed the premiership.
[We have repeatedly pointed out that the Kurks have come under considerable U.S. pressure to withhold support from al-Maliki if he builds his coalition government solely on the basis of the support of the Sadrists.]
