Bikers shield families of US soldiers killed in Iraq from cult

Five women sang and danced as they held up signs saying "thank God for dead soldiers" at the funeral of an army sergeant who was killed by an Iraqi bomb.

For them, it was the perfect way to spread God's word: America was being punished for tolerating homosexuality.

For the hundreds of flag waving bikers who came to this small town in Michigan Saturday to shield the soldier's family, it was disgusting.

... it was the callousness and cruelty of harassing the grieving families of soldiers at dozens of funerals across the country that has sparked a grassroots movement of bikers determined to drown out the jeers and taunts.

In Flushing, Michigan they turned their leather-clad backs to the five women and held flags and tarps up so that mourners walking past wouldn't see the signs saying "God hates fags," "fag vets" and "America is doomed."

The glee with which the women hurled insults made John Franklin, 64, sick to his stomach.

"This guy's family deserves a peaceful funeral. It's not right what they're doing," said Franklin, who fought in the Vietnam War. "The only reason they're able to walk around like that is because the veterans fought for their freedom."

I just wonder who their god is. The Bible NEVER talks about hating a person you can hate sin but their is absolatly NEVER no reason for people acting in the way these women have. It's so agravating when people take the Bible out of context and do things like this. Jesus always had his arms open. He is LOVE and he loved (not did hatred things) to all. These are not christian women as they claim to be.

I must agree with WW in the respect that many who protest and have teh right to have also forgot the lives of those who gave them that right. This instance in my opinion is as bad as a hate crime. Three cheers for those bikers.

Yes, it is as bad as a hate crime, Lonestar.. and dispicable to attack people in their grief over your differing political or religious viewpoint. Jesus Christ SAT with sinners, and I cannot believe that He would PICKET people in their vulnerable state of grief in order to force a political or theological statement.

Sounds to me, windbreaker, like the ones who acted like this crowd and stuck their noses in the air, sitting in judgement on the behavior of sinners, was the religious folks of Jesus' day who opposed Jesus (the scribes and Pharisees), not His disciples who were also sitting with the sinners! If Jesus had a differing opinion to communicate to them, He certainly did not choose this kind of demoralizing, mean-spirited and unloving way of showing it.

You are right. It is also an attack on people of faith using a rare and evil exception to try to curtail religious freedom. But if it reaches the Supreme Court, I do hope they will make a law stating that when PEOPLE are grieving they should not be subject to protesters. They should not stop legitimate protests, whether it be these people or PETA trying to stop what they consider inhumane use of animals at laboratories for experiments or Greenpeace trying to protest whale hunting, or prolife activists trying to stop abortion. However, when there is a funeral and human beings are grieving, they should not be subject to such harrassment in their grief. I personally object to the message these particular protesters are hurling of hatred where they state that God hates homosexuals, Swedes, Americans or Canadians. I object because the Bible says (my bracketed comments):

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that WHOEVER believes in Him (INCLUDING HOMOSEXUALS, Swedes, Americans or Canadians) should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world (INCLUDING HOMOSEXUALS, Swedes, Americans or Canadians); but that the world through him might be saved.

Luk 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

The mission of Jesus was not to condemn mankind, but to seek and to save them. His people should be doing nothing more than carrying on His mission, if they are to be "followers of Christ" (which is what the word CHRISTIAN means).

Protesting has its place and should not be stopped - however, an unChristlike message of hatred (using Jesus' name) which harrasses grieving people is not a legitimate aim to be protected by law. It is an abuse. In my opinion, there should be a law which stops protests from happening at funerals and gravesites. People should be allowed to grieve in peace. If people wish to protest the war, they should not be allowed to do it at a funeral. There are many places to conduct rallies, the gravesite of a soldier should not be such a place but should be a place of honor for those who so honor it as such. That place of honor should not be defiled by hatred, strife and harrassment in the name of freedom of religion and free speech. Those honoring the life of that soldier and his or her sacrifice should not have it defiled by such harrassment and hate. Without removing the rights of freedom of religion and freedom of speech, there should also be a right to the freedom to grieve unmolested at a funeral or gravesite, and honor our war dead.

That bad, huh? You figure it is the thin edge of a wedge which would take down freedom? Well, it is possible. Give an inch on a freedom and they may take a mile, removing much more than we anticipate away. The erosion of the very freedoms these servicemen and women died to preserve would be a horrible travesty.

Sighh.. how horrible to have to suffer with such harrassment to preserve a fundamental liberty. The families are as heroic in their grief and suffering at the hands of these "protesters" as those they are seeking to honor by holding a funeral or gravesite service. Kudos to the bikers who are shielding them as best can be done under the law as it stands... it shows great compassion.

I am appalled at this story, i cant believe that kind of thing can happen.
It makes my blood boil coming from a military background. Ignorance is bliss for some i suppose..
