I’ve heard of many stories concerning recruiters, but my recent experience has left me disappointed. I would appreciate some advice from this very knowledgeable and experienced forum. Here is my story.
Back in the beginning of December my “ship came in", finally. I was tentatively hired by KBR. The recruiter I noticed was whisking off fast numbers and all of the so called "overtime", uplifts, and all that good stuff, and getting the sales pitch down pretty good. I was ready for all of that, and knew that KBR was not the highest paying company, nor the lowest, and I was prepared to work my rear off even in a “Coordinator’s” position.
Problem was that the recruiter gave me a heads up about the dental form taking awhile because I would need to set up an appointment and then if there was a problem it could take even longer. I passed all the other stages with no hitches, background, etc. I even got a new passport in order to get things done faster during processing. Comes time to go, and just a week before, the recruiter emails me and says my trip to Houston has been delayed for a week.
A good thing, because I was about to call and let the recruiter know that the dentist told me I needed extensive dental work before he would sign off on the dental form. Recruiter very cheerfully gives me to the end of the month and says “no problem”.End of the month was not enough time and the dentist needed just three more weeks to get it all done right. All of a sudden the recruiter, who knew the situation very well, suddenly says, I can only hold the job for a month (although the job was already held for nearly two months).
I couldn’t believe the sudden change in demeanor, and especially after the recruiter said that such things happen all the time. Recruiter says, call me when everything is done, and let’s see what I have then, saying it probably wouldn’t be a problem suggesting there were jobs coming up all the time. So, I recently emailed to reconfirm that I’ll be ready around the time I said I would earlier.
Response is..“Sorry, I don’t have anything now, thks”. That was it. I then call and there is a slight pause after I identify myself (like the recruiter was slightly shocked that I followed up with a call at all). The recruiter then went into an unconvincing dialogue about how it’s been slow since when the recruiter called me in the beginning of December. As a matter of fact, I know it has been quite busy since the first of the year, but do not say that to the recruiter, trying to keep it civil.
I do politely say however that there has been a number of postings for my kind of work (which I could not apply for because I was going through the dental work), and the recruiter answers..”Those jobs were for names already assigned”. I say “ok, so what should I do? Will you call me when something opens up for me"? The recruiter says “I have all your info, and I will call if something comes up and let you know”. I asked can I post to those jobs or just wait for you. Recruiter says to wait for the call. Oh yeah, and the recruiter said I would have to redo the paperwork all over again, where before, that was not a necessity.
Something is not making sense here already, so I ask..”Are you the only recruiter that these job openings come to"? Recruiter says “Yes”. Later I find out that these jobs are pretty much evenly distributed amongst recruiters and that is not always the case..even though it might be the recruiters “specialty” at times, but hardly this area I don't think. I then say, can I send you the job or requisition number perhaps and give you a heads up if I see a job that I would like to apply for. Recruiter says..”Sure, you can always shoot me an email and let me know”.
Now this is really not making any sense to me at all. My question is Why can’t I post to these jobs as the recruiter will supposedly get them anyway and how can that hurt particularly when the recruiter says it would be a good idea to shoot an email up as a reminder? What I got out of the entire conversation was that the recruiter was politely..if that is the word for it..getting me off the radar screen, or the old “heave ho”!
The kicker was the last two short emails. I send the recruiter a courtesy follow up email with “Thanks” (and recruiters name), and the recruiter emails me back with “Sure”..(sure what I was thinking).
That’s it posters. That's my story with a KBR recruiter. So, what do I do..wait to hear from this recruiter or..post away?! Your suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks
