25/02/2012 16:30 DUHOK, Feb.25 (AKnews)- Despite security measures, smuggling arms, ammunition, fuel and cigarettes from Sinjar in the Iraqi Nineveh province into Syria is ongoing.
A Kurdish security official from the disputed Sinjar district (124km west of Mosul) who demanded anonymity said that the smugglers do not belong to a certain political party. "They are just individuals who hope to become rich quickly."
Arms are increasingly being smuggled into Syria since public protests against Bashar al-Assad's regime began last March.
The source added that the Kurdish forces are not responsible for protecting the border of Nineveh province with Syria; the Iraqi border guard forces should do so.
