Head of elections' commission arrested over corruption
13/04/2012 10:15 ERBIL, April 13 (AKnews)- Faraj Haidari, head of the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq (IHEC) and one of the commission members have been arrested over a financial corruption charge, said an MP.
Under article 340 of Iraqi penal code, Haidari and Kareem Tamimi have been arrested for three days until the investigation are carried out, National Alliance MP Hanan Fatlawi told Kurdish Rudaw newspaper, yesterday.
She said the officials are accused of rewarding some employees of the commission "illegally."
Upon a request from Fatlawi, the House of Representatives hosted Haidari to clarify some allegations of corruption and fraud against the commission management. However, Haidari retained his post after he re-obtained the vote of confidence.
Haidari is a Kurd and a cadre of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, led by Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani. He was elected to his current post in 2007.
